» macgregor - Flatness of Kansas

How very true, Janette!

When I first moved here to Kansas, I thought the state was flat, especially since I was raised in Pennsylvania and then lived in Maryland after college. This summer, however, I drove out to southwestern Kansas, which is very flat. On the way home, I was amazed at the hills we drove over on I-70. Almost as astonishing as the herd of camels lounging atop one of them.

Great article!

» PearlPrice - geography lesson

Hi Jan,
I found this article fascinating. Thanks for describing the various types of land and rivers. What a diverse state. I got caught up in the history relating to the geography.

Then I started thinking about how I love to live on an island, be near the ocean and look at mountains. When I lived in Calgary, there were some foothills, but mostly it was flat country.

When I lived in the midst of Mindanao, an island of the Philippines, it seemed very flat to me. I do love my ocean and my mountains. smile

Right now I don't see the mountains enough. When I lived in Burnaby near Vancouver, I used to look out at Burnaby Mountain from my bed.

Thanks for the interesting geography lesson.

I think most people who drive across Kansas from east to west or north to south are surprised by the change in geography. The western third is vastly different than the eastern third of the state. And I love to watch shadows play across the Flint Hills. Beautiful country.

I have to admit I love the mountains, too, though I'm not sure I'd like to live in them. Being close enough to see them would be nice. Same with the ocean. The thing I remember about Calgary is the land seemed to roll on forever. It reminded me of Montana--Big Sky country.

» jerrib - My cousin lives in KS

but I've never been there. Your article sure intrigues me. Sounds like a great place to visit.

I invite you over to Washington State to read a little about where I live. We are different, for sure, but it's home for me!

Thanks for painting this pretty picture.

Pearl - check out Washington State. You may do all three at once here, as I'm sure you did in Vancouver. We have islands in Puget Sound (close to ocean!) that are surrounded by mountain views. But I'm sure you know about that!
