Yes, the firm of Russell, Majors and Waddell risked a lot for a huge payoff and lost. The Mormon attack was the beginning to the end of their monopoly. Sad in a way, especially when they could have told the government no, they wouldn't risk hauling that much uninsured goods in one trip.
