Thank you for the interesting article. I find Kansas History fascinating. The museums in Lecompton, Lawrence, and the Kansas Museum of History In Topeka are fun and educational stops for those in Kansas and for I-70 travelers.

Are you familiar with the newspaper publisher from Emporia, Ks. who took a brave and strong stand agaist the Ku Klux Klan in the first half of the last century?

Thanks again.

Thanks for dropping by the Kansas History site!

Kansas History is fascinating. The museums you've mentioned are fabulous. But there are many more! Each town has something unique to add to this state's heritage.

I've read about the editor you've mentioned. Those were troubled times and many courageous people came forward to stand for justice.
Please stop by and visit again.

Hi,

It was William Allen White, I believe he ran as an independent for governor in about 1924 with the purpose of expressing outrage against the Klan that was not being opposed by the other candidates. Although he lost the election, the issue got wide attention and support and the Klan was ultimately denied a charter in Kansas. His words against racial and religious intolerance would be strong for today, so I believe it took a great deal of character and courage to take such a stand in the 1920's in Kansas.

I just came back from the Kansas Museum of History and the old Indian Mission School on the grounds.

There is currently a nice display about the Prohibition movement and the role of Carrie Nation.

I saw an American flag that was one of the first with Kansas added as the 34th star. The stars were arranged in the shape of a five pointed star on that flag.

We are heading for Lawrence tonight for dinner...either Indian (eastern), the Paradise Grill, or the Bleu Jacket.

Next week we are going to explore the murals in the capital bulding in Topeka and the museums in Lawrence.

I grew up in Kansas City, Mo., but have now lived in Wichita and Topeka and will soon move to Overland Park. I am a Kansan now!

That's great you are visiting and enjoying the many Kansas historical sites and museums. In person and online! Throughout our history, we have had a lot of transplanted Missourians here. Welcome!

Jan,
I got caught up in the conflict between the proslavery and antislavery factions. Not knowing the history of Kansas, I didn't know what exactly happened, so you had me reading with bated breath to find out. smile

An unlikely combination, but a picture worth seeing as you describe the turmoil in your state history.

I also really like your welcome text - very colorful and enticing!

Welcome to the Suite, though I'm late in saying so. I've subscribed.

Thanks, Pearl, for dropping by again. I'm just glad that the biggest conflict waged between Kansas and Missouri today are between the rival college basketball and football teams. Those fought in the 1850s were downright deadly.Jan

That is an unlikely duo! I'm glad we're more civilized now.

We both have colorful state histories. We even have one town with the same name (Leavenworth), though I just saw on the news that the one in Washington is being threatened by forest fires.
