» discover613 - great article

I just wanted to comment on how nice this article is. It's about time that someone started writing about Jewish family values and how they relate to regular life outside of religious circles. Great job.

» matanshai - great sources!

I was so excited to discover your article! I am doing my own private research for a possible class on this exact subject in both the anecdotal and halchic sources on breastfeeding. It is so important that Jewish women realize that they are not simply making a personal, non-Torah related decision when it comes to nursing. I would love to compare notes with you.

» soli - questions from a gentile

Rachel,

I'm not Jewish but as a Christian have great interest in things Jewish. Anyway, I loved this article. The only thing I'm curious about is the story about the child who died after two years. Is reincarnation a common belief? I was very surprised to read that story.

Anyway, great job and I look forward to reading more.

» beekay - Welcome Rachael

Shalom Rachael!

I just wrote a longwinded post and it....disappeared into the CyberWorld somewhere.
Maybe He is trying to tell me I yak too much!
Anyway, I'll briefly recapture some of things I
had written. I agree with you that we struggle to
grasp the depth of the beautiful and spiritual act. I breastfed all five of my children...loved
every moment of it...it was so fulfilling...and
will always miss it. I think it is one of the greatest gifts that a mother can give her child.
There is no feeling like holding your naked newborn against your bare left breast and giving
it the milk of life. I am curious to know if other women are/were partial to offering their left side as I certainly was. Anyway, will post this now before it goes out into that great unknown cyberspace. I will be back for more of your articles. I am particularly drawn to the fact that it is a Jewish perspective, given my
own background. :-) Brenda

» daydreaming613 - Reincarnation and Nursing from the left side

Sally,

Welcome! By the way. you do not have to announce your non-Jewish status -- we take questions and comments from everyone. smile

You ask a good question. Judaism does believe in a sort of reincarnation, but it is not anything like the Eastern thought. I do not think I can explain it as well as this web site:

http://www.judaismalive.org/live/reincar...

Check it out.

And for Brenda,
I tend to nurse more on the left side, but I always thought that was because I wanted to type on the computer with my right hand! smile But who knows --- perhaps there is a mystical significance to that. Interesting point!

Anyone else?

» Annys - breastfeeding

What a wonderful article. I'm currently breastfeeding both my 11 month old and my 2 1/2 yr old and there is nothing I love more than looking down at them and feeling my love flow into their sweet bodies to nourish them.

» willowwolf1 - Breastfeeding insites

What a beautiful article and what a beautiful way to look at breastfeeding. Since becoming a mother I have felt a disconect with my spiritual side since so much time is taken up taking care of my kids. There's so little time for learning an davening that I sometimes feel a bit lost.
Recently a talk with a Rabbi has helped me to begin to see the connection between raising my children and my spiritual connection to Hashem. This take on breastfeeding is just what I needed!

Thanks
