It was an American term, but that does not dismiss the race. I grew up in an Irish area after my grandparents came to America from Ireland. All of us are Black Irish, even beyond what you guys have been discussing. Of course we have the jet black hair and dark brown eyes, but our skin is very dark as well. Their is a difference between even olive skin and our own. We're often confused as being Mexican and in an Irish area we really stand out. It is impossible to believe that in a place of little or know sun would produce people as dark as we are. I first starting hearing people talk about the myth of the Black Irish in recent years. I wondered if it was true, so I did a lot of researh myself. You see, all my ancestors come from Galway. I studied the route of the Spanish Armada as laid out by the best scientists of today and it was confirmed that an estimated 100 plus ships landed on the shores of Ireland. 75% of these ships were driven into the coast of Galway. It was there that a race within a race was started, or reinforced, if you believe that the original inhabitants were dark as well. Anyway, a few months ago I watched scientists on the Discovery Channel break down the whole trip of the Spanish Armada and they confirmed my findings. People may want to call the Black Irish a myth as a way to go against the grain and stand out. The truth of the matter is, you don't become as dark as we are in a place with very little sun, without an influence from another region. Several scientists have confirmed the findings of the Spanish Armada as well. One last thing, I read someone say that the idea was the Spanish ran around attacking and raping the Irish. This couldn't be farther from the truth. The Spanish were actually afraid of Ireland and were told to avoid it by all means. At that time the Irish were seen as very hostile barbarians. The Spanish desparetily wanted to aviod the (Thought to be) savages at all costs. It was a miscalculation that drove them onto the coast that they feared. -- posted by BlackIrish » hakim9 - Re: Black Irish Black Irish:If you are interested try www.nationalgeographic.com. then go shoping for item# 72036D, Genographic Project.we ordered ours last night ,it may answer some questions for us.if you do please keep the rest of us here posted, don't use the E Mail here because it don't work -- posted by hakim9 » BlackIrish - Re: Black Irish Hakim,Thanks for the information. It would be nice to finally solve some of the mysteries surrounding the Black Irish. I'm about to go out of town, but I will have to think about ordering this kit. It's expensive, but my curiosity might get the better of me. -- posted by BlackIrish » taylynn - Re: Black Irish is present in my family In response to Black Irish is present in my family posted by ryanblackirish:I just saw your posting and realize it was a while ago you wrote it. But, yes. I've seen that very same kind of thing with my own brother and myself. He had very black curly hair and hazel eyes. I have red curly hair and grey eyes. We are of Scottish and German blood, with a dash of Native American. Otherwise, the family resemblence was unmistakeable!! Be proud! -- posted by taylynn » shontegoins - black irish I have resently met someone who said that he was "black Irish|" he is dark with blue eyes. When I say dark I do not refer to olive or mexican tones. This man has to be of some african desent. I do not like to be lied to so I always ask questions and research before i wash my hands. DO YOU ANY OF YOU KNOW IF THIS IS POSSIBLE? A BLACK MAN WITH BLUE EYES TO BE BALCK IRISH?Please someone get back to me.Thank you -- posted by shontegoins » BlackIrish - Re: black irish Well, Shontegoins, there is little chance that he is actually Black Irish, at least in the sense that we are talking about here. When many Irish were taken prisoner under Cromwell's reign of terror they were sent to Barbadose as slaves. Many of the slaves mixed in with Black slaves. The problem here is, many Africans have the misconception of calling these people Black Irish. Any African with any type of Irish in there background might be under the misconception that they are "Black Irish". The truth is, he is probably not what the term "Black Irish" really means, which are the Irish with dark features and often darker skin tone (Like myself and many others). The real Black Irish are survivors from the Spanish Armada, which mixed in with the people of Ireland, especially in Gallway. More than likely your friend is Black with an Irish person in his background and he mistakenly refers to himself as Black Irish.-- posted by BlackIrish » fryemyers - Re: Black Irish In response to Black Irish posted by BlackIrish:My grandfather told me that I was a descedent of black irish, but that the family name was also a very ancient irish name. O'Foran of St Claire County. I've done research to prove that the O'Forans' was a long time past Irish name. Also my mother on that side of the family completely describes that of black irish -- posted by fryemyers » hakim9 - Re: Re: Black Irish Hi Fryemyersi don't know how this applies to Ireland but must western European last names are occupational or descriptive( Miller, Wheeler, White, Short ....etc ) or they are slave names of the Land Lords who owned the land and the people who lived on it, so the name can be of Irish French or English but the named could be of Italian Spanish or North African origin. -- posted by hakim9 » hooligan69 - blackirish My daughter's Father is named MULLIGAN.My Daughter has almost black hair and green eyes and a olive complexion. Her son was born with the oddest complexion I have ever seen..could this be black irish?-- posted by hooligan69 Please follow the guidelines set forth in the Suite101 Posting Etiquette when adding to the discussion. |
