That post was meant simply to indicate your posting of the numbers was outdated and did not reflect what was actually passed by Congress. Your chart showed a 17% reduction for the lowest level wage earners. By leaving this group out of the child care tax rebate, their benefit from the tax cut was zero. A tax credit for these folks reduces their 7.5% FICA taxes, it does not come out of the pockets of other working people. Just to put this perspective. Most of these families are living on minimum wage incomes of $5.15 per hour (or near that level), which translates to $10,442.40 per year. Even with two wage earners it means a total income of under $21,000 per year. People with ambition and willingness to work harder or smarter should be rewarded proportionately or our Nation will dwindle and become second rate. I feel the government should level the playing field and tax everyone the same on the first Dollar they make as the last Dollar they make. . Steve, This would work if everyone started out on even footing. That's not true for most of the wealthy today. Many of them were born into that wealth, were educated in the best schools that money could buy, and were able to use their connections to get into Ivy League schools, even if they may not have had the top grades. Few people who come from families that can't afford to pay for private schools and put their children on the path to get into the best colleges are able to break out of that track. Yes, some do excel and get a full scholarship, but my point is that we don't all start in the same place or at the same socioeconomic level. Sure they may put their spin on it and be overly dramatic from time to time. I have gone through times in my life when I have paid little in the way of income tax. Now I try to work within the system we have to pay as little as I can and still be legal. I must say I don’t mind paying my fair share. My life is certainly better than it was when taxes were not something I thought about more than a few minutes a year. I wouldn’t want to switch places with a guy married with 4 kids making $15,000 a year. Everyone should take every opportunity they can to minimize their tax hit. I certainly advocate that in my book the Complete Idiot's Guide to Tax Breaks and Deductions. The drive to surrender to private charity much of government's role in programs to help the poor is not the product of some great wave of sentiment among the general public. The average person neither knows nor greatly cares about safety-net programs of government and private agencies. Few are even aware of the sources of support for the social services provided in their communities, and most probably have no opinion on whether government or private charity is inherently best at providing assistance to the poor. The public at large has not discerned a necessity for private charity to displace government welfare programs. You have it backwards. Private charity goes back centuries..it's the government welfare programs that have done the replacing. The stern measures advocated by the conservatives remind many people of the failed policies of the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries that led to creation of post-Great Depression entitlement programs and the emergence of the modern welfare structure. ..just can't think in terms of anything but government programs, can you.
