» Jonathon - Bookings

I heard Mr. Brinker mention that "bookings" were flat on Teradyne. Does anyone know what "bookings" refers to? Thanks

That Krueger guy is a gal, and maybe David could invite her, since she subscribes to David K's interpretations. Yes - she did write a nice tribute to BB and to David. Wonder if BB will read that one on MoneyTalk?.....Jen

» Q_out - Bookings definition

Bookings are new orders. Investors care more about orders on the books than sales, because sales are history -- orders are the future.

Has your day ever been "booked solid"? That means every hour is already planned, and there's no time to consider something new. Or perhaps you've "booked" a hotel room. The hotel hasn't yet provided you the room, nor have they collected the money, but they have some reasonable expectations of future income.

Because the machines made by semiconductor capital equipment makers cost hundreds of thousands or even millions of dollars each, they are built to order, and the sales income may lag the order by three months or more.

Right now, the orders for semiconductors are coming in 30% faster than the chip-makers can ship them out. To increase their production they'll need more equipment. That leads to orders for the semiconductor capital equipment companies.

For details see the May sales report, May Semi Book-to-bill

» Kirk - Summary of 7/8/00 show

Key points I remember (I was in chat, on the phone, etc. and missed much, but someone always would give a heads up when something good was said)

  • Bob is still a bear.
  • Expects NASDAQ to get up to maybe 4400
  • Expects QQQ to get above $100
  • WILL give advice on the radio on when to sell QQQ (before he sells?)
  • WILL not give OFFICIAL recommendation for shorting but does not rule it out for "sophisticated" investors
(Aren't you impressed that the latest survey says 85% of the people in the US think they are above average?)
  • Does not agree with Abby on market closing 2000 level.
(Not a new position since he stands by his 5% max gain for 2000 in S&P500 though I thought he said no new highs)

Anything else I miss?

Oh yeah, if you call his show and complain about not getting the QQQ call in the newsletter, then he gets mad and says he will stop talking about this stuff on the radio. Solution is call and tell him how wonderful he is if you want him to keep telling you about QQQ and other opportunities.

» JackSwanson - Will

Brinker doesn't have to worry about becoming a Garzarelli or a Granville. He's not a household name. He's never quoted, or interviewed on major news networks. Only now and then on PBS. He's not highly thought of. One problem is his track record isn't that good, the other is his face for radio, and his 3rd obvious problem is that Beaver that died on his head.

» Rande - Official summaries on bb.

Official summaries on bb.com. A case of reverse immitation being the greatest form of flattery? Guess bullying and (true to form) trying to villify DK by rallying a bunch of similarly nasty people against his work didn't pan out. In the end it seems it was all nothing but sound and fury signifying nothing, culminating in a classic case of "if you can't beat 'em, join 'em."

Why will DK's summaries continue to be in demand? Simple -- Brinker's tendency to spin his message, his me-against-the-world, I-can-do-no-wrong attitude will always make his sponsored summaries suspect. Aside from DK's insightful, humorous and entertaining "ECs," he brings OBJECTIVITY and INDEPENDENCE to the table (as much as anyone could) in that he is at once a follower of Brinker's recommendations AND able to rise above his own personal vested interest (obviously has a strong enough mind to avoid the Svengali-like hold others appear susceptible to) to voice the ocassional independent criticism. In short:

Insight
Humor
Entertainment
Objectivity
Independence

...are his selling points. The fact that he is "in the camp" is key as well -- if all he did was point out how wrong Brinker is all the time (hate it when people do that ;)) he would only make his core base -- those who ARE following Brinker's advice -- feel bad.

But, the big differentiation is the objectivity and independence. How long will it be before some draw comparisons to "missing pieces" and "missing posts?"

» Kirk - Interesting call summary

Interesting call summary

I windsurfed last weekend so missed much of the show. I was glad to hear this interesting summary or a call where as lady asked if she should get out now since we were at the same level as the January call.
