» Gene - Bob's Weekend Shows

Well, I just thought I toss my $.02 into the Brinker market radio ring. I'll lead off with "my executive summary", IMHO, I found Bob's shows this week-end's to be very well done, informative and on the mark for what is going on with this market. Others above have stated what was said in their summaries.

I will freely admit to be perplexed by this market action the last 2 weeks. Oh, sure we all have opinions and sector rotation looks to be the most obvious. Admittedly that was my 1st reaction, but there were enough disturbing sideshows, assumed trends and head fakes to make this here investor more than a bit jittery.

While I have my asset allocation where I want it and I have even managed to pick up a couple of value related stocks, I was taken a back by the quickness of it all. And lately the speed and rapidity with which $$ has been thrown at the "smoke stackstinker" stocks to use Jack's phrase has been mindboggling to say the least. It is as if all stocks MUST advance 2 to 10 points a day to be worthwhile and many former growth stocks are now the untouchables! But then they buy the growth back en mass but sell them the next day! I was looking for some stock distribution here but that doesn't seem to hold up either.

I have heard all the CNBC talking heads and read all the predictions and stats about solid profits, overbought market, low interest rates, rising rates, negligible inflation, because of oil, US inflation on the way up, stock buybacks, boomer retirement cash, pickup in world demand, oil rates, looming inflation etc etc to fill a 6 inch notebook but this is the weirdest market action I can ever recall!

It has the appearance of the long predicted but seldom seen "Big blow off" but without all the hoopla that one expects to happen with it - Small Caps ablazing, pronouncements galore etc. Maybe the Bond market jitters heightened it for me but something doesn't feel right. Not a wall of worry but a wall of what the hell is going on!

I feel Bob captured it perfectly - not bad enough signals to get out, stay the course BUT enough "pathetic ones (his phrase) to really watch it closely. Meaning, one just doesn't go off and forget their asset allocations, throwing caution to the wind by chasing some hot cyclical stock nor throwing $$ at a beaten down growth stock without a solid fundamental reason.

Remember his straight forward question to a caller who thought wanted to buy AT&T because it wouldn't go down as much - "What makes you say that?"

Conclusion - I think his advice of watching it closely and key is what is going to happen "Going forward, not how we got here" is just as pertainent as "Don't be out of the market for a single day" was last October!

Hey, Bob got me to this retirement stage after 10 years and I don't see any reason to desert him now!

Just another opinion.....Gene

» JenL_3 - Great Post !

Gene - Thanks for eloquently sharing your Market angst. I have very similar misgivings about this market. DOW 11K is TOO FAST - TOO SOON IMHO, but then I've been waiting for a correction back to DOW 9600, so WDIK.

» Mark_J - market

I've quit playing options for now. I think the market is too toppy, and I don't like to play puts.

» LR - Gene, Thanks for your summary of the show last weekend.

Gene, Thanks for your summary of the show last weekend. I've not been able to listen to it for a few weeks, and a few more may go by before I'm around to hear it! All I can say is keep a cool head and don't react, respond. Have a plan. Stay within your allocation, or reduce your risk if you're getting too nervous by moving funds into money markets or Treasuries. The question I keep asking myself (I heard it first on BB show) is how would I feel if my portfolio was reduced 20-40% or more? Need I say more?

» Chris3 - Steve's Summary

I sure miss Steve's summary, too. Sports often preempts BB in recent weeks in my area and I haven't been able to get that darn RealPlayer to work for me so I can listen on the web! Where are you Steve? You are greatly missed!
