» tele - Tax Free States

I live in sunny FL where we have no state income tax, but there is an intangible tax of 0.002 pct on stocks, bonds (not treasuries or FL munis) and mutual funds. Gov Bush is proposing to raise the exemption significantly. Property tax rates are similar to where I used to live in SF Bay Area ie about 1 pct of market value, but you get a lot more house for your money in most parts of FL than in most parts of CA. Assessed value increases are limited to 3 pct annually unless house is sold, then new assessment is at sales price (similar to CA. When all is said and done, FL more tax friendly than CA.

» DennisL - Lucky Seven Per Capita Taxation

Rande, of the lucky seven, which one or two have the lowest per capita taxation, factoring in all of the use taxes, utility taxes, property taxes, etc. that you mentioned above? What's your opinion of NV? That's where I plan to live when I reach critical mass.

Dennis,

Don't have the figures handy -- I believe WA and AK are high on the list. NV would be my first choice too. Here's the ideal scenario -- spring/summer at Tahoe and fall/winter in Las Vegas.

» matttheduck - state & local tax burdens

this happens to be right up my professional alley. for the 1993-94 fiscal year (i'm working on 95-96 right now, but only have a few states completed), here are the "cheapest" per capita states:

alabama $1,601.17
Mississippi $1,653.25
Arkansas $1,678.90
Louisiana $1,720.12
Tennessee $1,759.05
So Carolina $1,800.68
So Dakota $1,818.90
W. Virginia $1,839.39
Oklahoma $1,846.22
Missouri $1,865.10

nevada was 19th highest at $2,354.11
remember a couple of things - these numbers represent only the taxes (personal income, corporate income, sales, property, etc)not the fees or other charges leveled by govt that aren't "taxes." secondly, per capita is really just an average -- your personal situation could differ dramatically depending on where you get your income, or how you spend it. for more info:

» DennisL - State Tax Burden List

Thanks, Duck, for the list. It sure is dominated by small southern states, isn't it? Is there any rational explanation for that?

The income tax is the biggie, so I don't think I'll let NV's standing as 19th highest deter my plans for the days of critical mass.

» KirkL - Incline Villiage is nice

but I prefer to set my critical mass target high enough so I can live anywhere I darn well please and not let the silly government's blood sucking ways keep me from living in a beautiful area like Marin, SF Penninsula to Santa Cruz, etc... with the great weather.... windsurfing, biking, golf, diving in Monterey Bay....

Then again, that home in Incline Village sounds great and make my Los Altos one a 'second home' as a stretch dream!

My impressions from early in the show. Bob sounds more negative than he has been in a long time. Sounds like with the rise in interest rates, speculation, complacency and extreme valuations he sees two probable outcomes, either a health restoring correction of significant proportions or absent that we're heading into a potential dangerous zone were a bear market call could be in the future. In fact failing a correction and in the absence of falling interest rates or other positive developments I would not be shocked if Bob made a rare call to decrease equity allocation below 100% without an actual bear market call occurring. This is my interpretation only and not a recounting of the show and Bob might disagree with some or all of this and for the moment he is still at 100% invested in the equity portion . These factors along with us heading into what I believe is a historically weak month is why I'm probably going to hold off on jumping onto attractive sectors like the semi capex

You guys hear that smart-ass "Jerry" telling Bob that since he's still officially 100% long but talking very cautious than he'll be right no matter what happens. I thought Bob sounded a little taken aback at the start of the call so I wouldn't be surprised if he lied to the screener and I wonder if it's the same Jerry who lied to the screener then harassed Bob over UTEK last year or so. I would of told the guy Timer's Digest doesn't care what's said on the radio and Bob's record stands pretty well by objective standards. Bob said something about not having a crystal ball but I think he might have wanted one to break over Jerry's head.
