Bob has been doing this for a long while!Want excitement watch your Riki Lake, Howard Stern, etc. But for me there is nothing like Money talk, I love the millioniare callers("I just sold my ISP company for $5.6 million and have been talking to several brokers and financial advisors. . .") or the shark attack stories! For me it is four hours well spent! Speaking of chewing up we've all heard Bob do that. Tony would last 10 seconds with Bob. -- posted by MichaelC_AU » JenL_3 - Tony's MoneyTalk Critiques and Poems Tony - I enjoy your MoneyTalk critiques on this thread, and your poems on the "Poetry and Prose" thread, like Click and Drink, The Pied Piper, and Patty-Cake, and consider them in a similar vein as the "BB-style" good-natured sarcasm found on the "Bad News Bears" thread. I don't think that you intend your writings to sound mean-spirited, or as personal attacks. I hope that no one else sees them that way either.But I also agree with Michael. "there is nothing like MoneyTalk". BB has helped so many people learn to take control of their own investing, and to avoid shark attacks. Besides being an expert at giving good sound common sense investment advice, and being an honest trustworthy financial analyst, Bob is a good showman, otherwise he would not have the following that he has had for all these years. BB's show is also very comforting and supportive. During last summer's correction, having MoneyTalk to listen to every weekend, and having our Suite 101 WAGS support group, was all the ammunition we needed to deal with market angst; and keep from selling at the bottom. That's not to say that an occasional call from TonyfromBrklyn wouldn't spice up the show a bit. But also agree with Michael, if you were too controversial on the air, you wouldn't last 10 seconds. (He holds the button, and he's been in the game a long time.) I agree Tony - BB shouldn't be so derisive of net-stock investers, day-traders, etc. It wouldn't hurt to talk about these topics a little more, and give credit where credit is due. Guess I just want to have it both ways. I love listening to MoneyTalk every weekend, and never tire of the show, even though much of it is repetitive, but that's charm of it. And Tony, I very much enjoy reading your critiques and poems that are somewhat critical of BB. Your unabashed fresh style is just the spice that is needed at Suite 101, in my opinion. He spent the entire monologue on Saturday discussing when the millenium really ends, and on Sunday discussing Al Gore's internet invention. His style on Sunday the 2 whiles day was very COZY and informal. No BRAGGING-to speak of. Impressed with his perception of E Commerce and the GREAT future of it. He has been taking this stance for a few weeks now. Seems to be changing his viewpoint on the NUT stocks. Unless I missed it; there were no THRASHING in this area. It was good that Bob fielded that PENNY STOCK question. Wonder what he would say about BOWG (SUITE 101.COM) Should we put this question to him? Not yet you say? You aint in? OK tell me when you are in!! LIked the GE call also with his HOLD comment, even with high valuation. Took it to mean that it was a BUY. Seems to be a rule that he cant put out a buy on a high valuation STOCK. I wonder if Bob really buys that P/E GUNK . Sorry to all you P/E lovers but thats the way I see it. Oh its not always GUNK but often. Too bad he didnt mention his (famous) stock AMAZON.COM. It does my heart good when I see this stock go up. No I dont own any but am rooting it on anyway. Not enough diversifaction on his show; didnt mention my favorite subject DAY TRADERS but thats OK. The fact that he is silent on it means its OK WITH HIM NOW (my viewpoint) Thats about it from this corner. As usual I have included time points for reference at the archive sites.:10 Bob opened talking about the Quarterly Mutual Fund section in Barron’s. Then Played what I thought was an April Fools joke on us. Talked about a new IPO idiot.com This new stock will never go down in price, designed for day traders, has no earnings, and is for the ignorant was it affluent :20 Caller asked about Banking sector and regional Banks? Bob likes the money center Banks. These were beaten down last fall. Caller asked about John Hancock regional bank fund? Bob said to be cautious about exposure in that area. :22 Caller asked about sentiment outlook? Bob said we are entitled to a pull back of 10% or a little more. Sees no change in recent weeks, we are close to new highs just a little above the Jan. highs and the advance / decline line is pathetic. Caller asked about ETEC? Bob said phototronics and Dupont were other players in that area but ETEC was the leader and has had problems in earnings. Then the caller asked about UTEK. Bob said it has been gloomy and a lot of it is due to industry problems. Those conditions must improve and thinks we will see improvement. It has been a longer tougher road than Bob anticipated. :26 Caller asked about Vanguard GNMA fund and what factors influence share price? The direction of Interest rates are the major influence. This has a yield of about 6.25% and thinks rates are going down due to the jobs report out for March. :33 A small investor called about getting in on the IPO of idiot.com thinks he can day trade it and clean up. Bob was very sympathetic and wished he could give him good news thinks many will ask for as many shares as they can get. Bob said to do the FUNDAMENTAL RESEARCH. :36 Caller heard the S&P500 were being held up by a few stocks. Bob said a narrow group was moving the index. Caller thought it a good idea to buy the growth index from Vanguard. Bob checked performance and confirmed the growth index had been picking the correct stocks. :43 Caller has a deferred comp. Plan with Acorn small cap fund that has out performed the Russell 2000. Bob then went on to talk about his ideas on weightings in the US. Currently the Wilshire 5000 is about 79% Large Caps. And Bob says 15% is his recommendation for small caps. Until we see momentum in the small cap area. :52 Caller has some Fidelity that are producing a lot of capital gains. An advisor is trying to sell him an annuity rapped in variable life insurance. Bob said it sounds like the advisor is trying to generate commissions. Said he should check out the annuity at Vanguard. And buy Term insurance if needed. (Can you spell shark) :55 Caller asked about Y2K and its affect on the markets? Bob thinks IF we are still bullish at the end of year could be a buying opportunity. 1:10 Caller and wife in early 50’s in a 403B for several years have been putting $ in loaded funds that as he said have been performing good wondered if should put in no-load funds instead? Bob did a performance analysis and found they are under performing the appropriate Indexes. 1:19 Caller asked if the DOW milestones are important or is the % change more important? Bob thinks the media hype is a joke and mentioned what he thought the bone head quote recently when the DOW almost closed above 10,000. 1:22 Caller asked about the Semi Cap Equipment differences between Small and large companies he owns AMAT and UTEK. Bob said the large caps have been attracting $ and small caps have been languishing. This will continue until the industry comes back and all companies should rise then. The entire area fundamentals perception has not changed. Bob mentioned placing a stop limit order on winners. Thinks should hold AMAT he bought at 24 will see higher prices when recovery expands but will be volatile and the small caps have required incredible patience. 1:28 Caller is about to retire and has a little cash for a CD and asked what to look for? FDIC insurance and yield was the answer. 1:34 Caller Wondered if the high P/E large caps were more likely to fall in a market down turn than small caps? IF we get a bear market (not on the radar screen now) the stocks that have seen the highest run ups are likely to decline significantly. The NASDAQ will most likely drop more than the DOW or S&P500. Bob said it is hard to imagine the small caps would escape. The cheap may get cheaper. Caller asked if we should lump sum in small caps? Bob said no Dollar cost average with a 15% small cap weighting and 0 % in a balanced portfolio.( portfolio 3) 1:38 Caller asked what States were free of Income tax? AL WA SD TX NV WY FL 1:43 Caller asked if war in Kosovo would affect markets and relationship with China and Russia? Bob thinks not. 1:53 Caller asked to repeat States with Income tax and which had the worst treatment. The States mentioned with heavy State Income taxes were CA HI ID IA ME MA MN MT ND OR 1:57 Caller asked how to tell which banks and Credit Unions were safe? Bob said check for Insurance and fees. Also get a Money Market Mutual Fund for good yields and check writing. 2:10 Bob opened the last hour talking about the opening of Baseball season and the teams with the largest payroll will do the best. The Melissa virus arrest was also mentioned along with the YAHOO deal with broadcast.com. 2:23 Caller asked if the market was liquidity driven and not earnings driven does Bob see DOW 11,000 and S&P500 at 1400 this year. Bob thought this would be a tremendous move. The only way that could happen is if we see significant decrease in interest rates and no fear of recession. Bob said 1998 S&P 500 earnings will come in just below $46.00 a little lower than expected. 2:26 Caller asked about Gold and now is it time to Buy. No was the answer Bob sees no catalyst. 2:34 Computer price continue to fall and performance rises. Mention was made of an ad in Barron’s for Dell. Caller bought VTSMX a few years ago and it doubled he pulled out the profits and bought some stocks. Now is considering pulling some money out of small caps and putting it in Munder net net fund, Janus 20, or Pfizer the amount is about 3% of net worth. Bob said the net fund is risky and he must accept that risk if that is his choice. Reviewed the record of Janus 20, and said Pfizer was his favorite Drug stock with a good pipe line of new drugs and to DCA in to it. 2:43 Caller has a 401K and may change jobs, has MFS funds and wondered if they should roll it in a IRA. Bob said she could do that, or put in new job 401K, or keep it where it is most likely. Also caller has some money from a real estate sale to invest and an advisor is trying to sell them on a guaranteed return plus the S&P 500. Bob said to check if they keep the dividends and recommended a S&P fund or SPY . 2:53 A new listener was asking about risks of a margin account. Bob gave a brief explanation and said most investors don’t use them. 2:56 Bob wrapped up talking about the AOL lay off and Treasury yields Personal note even though he didn’t mention his opening monologue joke maybe he will come clean tomorrow.
