» BPyles - More terrorists arrested

Steve: FYI in case you are tracking terrorists other than those in Afghanistan/Pakistan. This article lists names, ages and occupations of those arrested. Sounds like they are middle management, or maybe top level, as they are clergy, businessmen, accountant, bank officer, lecturer, teachers and taxi drivers. This KMM wing has possible links with Zacarias Moussaoui.

13 Members Of New Wing Of KMM Held

KUALA LUMPUR, Jan 4 (Bernama) -- Police have arrested 13 members of a new wing of Kumpulan Militan Malaysia (KMM) and are investigating the group's possible links with Zacarias Moussaoui, the Frenchman who is being tried for his alleged role in the Sept 11 terrorist attacks in the United States.

Inspector-General of Police Tan Sri Norian Mai said the 13 were arrested in several states
between Dec 9 and yesterday. They were rounded up in follow-up operations conducted after the arrests of 25 members of KMM, including its leader Nik Mohd Adli Nik Aziz, a son of the Kelantan Menteri Besar.

"We are still investigating whether there was a link between him (Zacharias) and any of the
personalities we have arrested," he said.

The new wing was different from the KMM group headed by Nik Mohd Adli but was still led by the same three "directing figures" as disclosed earlier, he told a news conference here Friday.

The three "directing figures" are Indonesian Mujahiddin Council head Abu Bakar Bashir @ Abdus Samad, independent preacher Hambali @ Nurjaman Riduan Isamuddin, who hails from Indonesia, and another independent preacher Indonesian-born Mohamad Iqbal A.Rahman, who has been in detention under the Internal Security Act (ISA) since last June. Abu Bakar and Hambali are still at large.

"They were arrested because they are believed to be carrying out activities which are a threat to national security, including holding secret meetings for the setting up of the Daulah Islamiah (Islamic government).

"There are plans to form the Daulah Islamiah covering this country, Indonesia and southern
Philippines, the majority of whose people are Muslims, according to their own perception," Norian said.

"We believe these wings do not know each other's existence, and this may be a tactic by their leaders to continue with their struggle if one of them was arrested," he said.

Those rounded up include businessman Yazid Sufaat, 37, who was arrested in Kedah on Dec 9, company manager Mohd Sha Sarijan, 48, accountant Abu Samad Shukri Mohd, 42, and headmaster Abd Razak Baharudin, 42, who were all arrested in Selangor on Dec 29.

Businessman Ahmad Sajuli Abd Rahman @ Fadlul Ahmad, 39, bank officer Ahmad Yani Ismail, 33, and businessman Suhaimi Mokhtar, 36, were all arrested in Kuala Lumpur on Dec 29.

Also arrested are businessman Shukry Omar Talib @ Shukry Omar, 34, who was picked up in
Selangor on Jan 1, taxi driver Shah Rial Sirin @ Syah Rial Bin Sirin, 38, businessman Mohamad Faiq Hafidh, 43, both arrested in Selangor on Jan 2, and Universiti Teknologi Mara (UiTM) lecturer Dr Abdullah Daud, 47, taxi driver Muhammad Ismail Anuwarul, 41, and teacher Shahril Hat, 23, all of whom were arrested in Johor yesterday.

Norian said Mohamad Iqbal was arrested on June 30 last year and has been placed under ISA detention for two years.

He said that according to checks with the Immigration Department, Zacharias was in the country on Sept 8-15 and Oct 5 in the year 2000.

He said apart from the 25 arrested in the first round of operation and the 13 arrested in the follow-up operation, police still have other targets and do not rule out the possibility of
uncovering a third wing within the group.

"Documents containing complete training schedules for 40 weeks and details of activities which will be carried out or were being implemented were seized during raids on the houses of these members," he said.

He said among the programme was ideology-related training to boost the spirit of their struggle, including studies and analyses on international militant movements like the MILF in southern Philippines, in Chechnya, Afghanistan and Ambon.

Norian said the documents also detailed other aspects of training, including theories on guerilla warfare, map-reading and use of firearms.

He said members of the group also conducted physical training like going on cross-country runs by carrying bags weighing 10 to 20 pounds.

"We have also found documents on efforts to gather intelligence on weapons in store, science
laboratories at institutions of higher learning and procedures used in protecting armouries," he
said.

Norian dismissed claims in a Singapore newspaper that if Malaysia had arrested two other terrorist suspects, Khalid Al Mirdha and Nawaf Al Azmi, when they were in Malaysia, the Sept 11 incident might not have happened.

"The allegation is unfounded because we have informed the United States of their presence as they have more interest in the two. To us, we have determined that the duo did not do anything which amounted to a threat to the country's security," he said.

They were also confirmed to be ordinary tourists but since they have records with other intelligence agencies, Malaysia extended this information to agencies which had interest in them, he said.

Norian said Malaysia had been firm and consistent in tackling the issue of terrorists as evident in its fight against the communists, the Al-Ma'unah movement and the KMM.

No militant groups were protected regardless of whether they were involved in terrorist activities within or outside the country, he said. -- BERNAMA
