1 Osama bin Laden -------------------- in peril at Tora Bora/Melawa Daisy Cutter drop, December 9, 2001. Or at large in the Pakistani town of Paracinar, since early December. Leader of al Qaeda
Born in 1957, in Saudi Arabia. He is left-handed and walks with a cane. Bin Laden's leadership style is more akin to that of the chairman of the board of a holding company, which may be a product of his education in business management at King Abdul Aziz University in Jedda, Saudi Arabia. In 1979, 200 armed fundamentalists, many of whom had studied Islam at Islamic University at Medina, took over the grand mosque at Mecca. But 63 of the ringleaders were publicly beheaded in selected town squares all over the country, and the seeds of rebellion quickly led to repression. Providentially that same year, Soviet troops rumbled over the mountain roads into Afghanistan to shore up a tottering pro-communist regime. The CIA had been covertly undermining the Afghan government by arming fundamentalist rebels - the mojahedin. Young Bin Laden joined the anti-Soviet campaign. He set off for Peshawar, as the most prominent of a Saudi contingent of poor citizens, students, taxi-drivers and Bedouin tribesmen. Osama bin Laden is one of 57 children of the late construction magnate Muhammad bin Laden, who was head of The Bin Laden Group, one of Saudi Arabia's biggest companies and which counts the Saudi royal family among its clients. The $5 billion empire builds roads, airports and hotels with interests also spanning telecoms, media and manufacturing. Osama inherited millions of dollars from the bin Laden empire after his father died but has since become the pariah of the family. He founded Al Qaeda in 1991, a collection of semi-autonomous terrorist groups, which has a flat organizational structure, with cells reportedly operating in at least 30 countries, perhaps as many as 55. Bin Laden has grown his corporation by mergers and acquisitions, so that, for example, the previously autonomous Islamic Jihad of Egypt has essentially fused with Al Qaeda. Ascetic in life style, often living in caves, Bin Laden gave generously of his fortune, building hospitals and clinics, purchasing weapons and ammunition. Inspirational in his rhetoric, he won the adulation of his Afghan freedom fighters. The defeat of the Soviet Union, a superpower, was confirmation that Allah was on their side. But success left Bin Laden without an enemy. His return to Saudi Arabia provided one: America, whose troops were stationed on sacred Islamic land. The first bomb attack on the World Trade Centre in New York took place in 1993: Osama bin Laden was in exile in Khartoum, nursing his rage against the Saudi royal family and the US bases they permit on Saudi soil. A series of Bin Laden triumphs followed--the 1993 World Trade Center bombing, Khobar Towers in 1996, the 1998 bombings of the U.S. Embassies in Kenya and Tanzania, last year's attack on the U.S.S. Cole in Yemen and the most spectacular terrorist act in history, the events of Sept. 11. On Sept. 17, a bin Laden aide gave the Afghan Islamic Press a statement in which bin Laden said: "I have taken an oath of allegiance to [Mullah Omar, head of Afghanistan] which does not allow me to do such things from Afghanistan. We have been blamed in the past, but we were not involved." On November 8, 2001, the Taliban granted him Afghan nationality. The United States has obtained a videotape, thought to have been taped November 9, 2001, at a home in Kandahar, of Osama bin Laden describing the damage around the World Trade Center -- where the twin towers and other buildings were destroyed -- as being much greater than he had expected. On the tape, which was obtained in Afghanistan during the search of a private home in Jalalabad, bin Laden praised God for far greater success than he expected, using language that indicated he was familiar with the planning of the attacks. The 40-minute tape appears to have been shot by an amateur. On the tape, bin Laden said he was at a dinner when first word came that a plane had crashed into a World Trade Center tower. Bin Laden said that he told the others at the dinner, and that they cheered. He then indicated on the tape that more is coming. Bin Laden used his outstretched hands to explain that he expected only the top of the Trade Center towers to collapse, down to the level where the airliners struck. The eventual total collapse of both towers, the al Qaeda leader said, was totally unexpected. He reportedly left the besieged Tora Bora base for Pakistan on December 2, 2001 with the help of local tribesmen, according to one of bin Laden's senior and most trusted aides, Abu Jaffar, who spoke to a reporter on December 12. Jaffar was speaking in an Afghan village still sympathetic to bin Laden, a day after his foot was blown off by a cluster bomb at Tora Bora. Several days later [around December 5], he said, bin Laden sent a replacement; his married 19-year-old son Salah Uddin, who is now the only bin Laden family member inside Tora Bora. "Bin Laden travelled out of Tora Bora twice in this Ramadan holy month. He left to meet the Taliban leader Mullah Omar about three weeks ago and stayed with him near Kandahar. "He left again just over a week ago [about December 3] and was headed to Pakistan where he was helped across the border by Pathan tribesmen," the wounded man said. The account of bin Laden's movements is the first detailed evidence that the terrorist leader has escaped the nightly inferno of US bombing raids on Tora Bora. It also matched earlier Telegraph accounts of bin Laden's movements, from his arrival in the White Mountains two days before the departure of the Taliban from Jalalabad to his lengthy dealings with sympathisers in the Pakistani town of Paracinar. American and Afghan officials, who have been insisting that bin Laden is in the area, have sounded less certain in mid-December about their own accounts of the movements of the world's most wanted man.

AKA: Osama bin Laden, Usama Bin Muhammad Bin Ladin, Shaykh Usama Bin Ladin, the Prince, the Emir, Abu Abdallah, Mujahid Shaykh, Hajj, the Director. DETAILS: Osama Bin Laden is wanted in connection with the August 7, 1998, bombings of the United States Embassies in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania, and Nairobi, Kenya. These attacks killed over 200 people. In addition, Bin Laden is a suspect in other terrorist attacks throughout the world, including the Sept. 11 suicide hijacking raids in New York, Virginia and Pennsyvnia. REWARD: $7 million. [later increased to $25 million]
2 Ayman Al-Zawahiri -------------------- may have been wounded in bombing at Tora Bora, December 3, 2001; wife and 5 daughters KIA at their Kandahar home, December 2, 2001. Founder of Egyptian Islamic Jihad, now cofounder, 2nd highest leader and CEO of al Qaeda
Born June 19, 1951, in Egypt. Al-Zawahiri is believed to now serve as an advisor and doctor to Usama Bin Laden. He is an Egyptian physician who is bin Laden's number two and believed by many to be the real brains behind al Qaeda. He is the founder of the defunct Egyptian Islamic Jihad, that later merged with al-Qaeda. Bin Laden has shared power with Ayman Zawahiri. In addition to being Bin Laden's designated successor, Zawahiri is Al Qaeda's CEO, in charge of daily planning and management and is believed by U.S. authorities to have planned the Sept. 11 attacks. It was with Zawahiri that Bin Laden jointly founded Al Qaeda, "the base," in 1991. Zawahiri's role underscores the distinction between Al Qaeda and other terrorist movements: It is a two-headed organization. Furthermore, Zawahiri is considered to be even more apocalyptic, and more charismatic, than Bin Laden, so that while it appears to the outside world that Bin Laden is the charismatic force driving Al Qaeda, in fact, within the organization the two leaders are experienced as a charismatic duo. On November 8, 2001, the Taliban granted him Afghan nationality. He may have been directly involved in the biological weapons program. US Intelligence confirmed that his house in Kabul resembled the lair of a mad scientist. Northern Alliance soldiers who raided the house on Nov. 13 found grenades, blasting caps, electronic components and "various solid and liquid substances." These included white crystals and extremely fine, silvery powders in jars and plastic bags, and mysterious liquids in shampoo bottles labeled SPECIAL MEDICINE. American intelligence later collected samples from Northern Alliance colleagues and conducted chemical and biological tests. One of the samples turned up a "positive indicator" for Bacillus anthracis, or anthrax. Zawahiri's death, which has been reported but not confirmed in early December 2001, would be as significant for Al Qaeda as Bin Laden's. In an interview from a village at the base of Tora Bora on December 12, a wounded senior al-Qa'eda member, Abu Jaffar, said that most of the family of Ayman Zawahiri, had been killed by US bombs [December 2, 2001 at their Kandahar home]. He said that reports of Zawahiri's death had been false. This would explain an obituary for the Zawahiri family, but not for himself, in an Egyptian newspaper.

Ahmed reportedly had details of the planned attacks that were thwarted in the United States before the millennial celebrations of December 1999. Sources said that he has provided information about the alleged involvement of a Yemeni intelligence officer in the October 2000 terrorist boat-attack on the destroyer USS Cole at a Yemeni port, in which 17 U.S. sailors were killed. One source said Ahmed also knew some of the 19 hijackers who took over four planes on Sept. 11 and carried out the worst terrorist incident in U.S. history, killing about 4,000 people. Ahmed's information is considered a critical link between the hijackers and al Qaeda. Shortly after the terrorist attacks, he was one of two suspected al Qaeda members who were picked up in Bahrain, a tiny island state off the east coast of Saudi Arabia. The two were sent to Saudi Arabia for questioning, and they provided authorities there with an al Qaeda contact telephone number in the country. Saudi authorities tracing phone calls tracked down and arrested this senior al Qaeda figure who uses various aliases. The CIA provided his name to reporters as "Abu Ahmed." He and five other al Qaeda members were arrested while attempting to leave the country. Ahmed is believed to be the highest-ranking al Qaeda member to be held for questioning, and is one of the people believed to have had advance knowledge of previous terrorist attacks.
