This morning La Voz de Aztlan had a personal telephone interview with the Mexican Congressional Press Secretary, Lic. Adriana Lopez, and verified the arrest of the two Israelis after they had entered through the highly secured front entrance of the Palacio Legislativo de San Lázaro. She stated to La Voz de Aztlan that the two terrorists had taken advantage of a situation that occurred around 1700 hours of Wednesday October 10 when a large contingent of Sugar Industry Unionists were entering through the metal detectors. The two Israelis followed about 50 of the unionists to the office of the President of the Mexican Congress Beatriz Paredes. The two Israelis were first pretending to be press photographers but called the attention of the sugar unionists because of their nervous and out of the ordinary behavior. About ten of the unionists confronted them and observed that they were carrying guns and and what looked to them to be explosives. They held the two Israelis until Official Congressional Security personnel took them into custody. The head of Congressional Security Salvador Alarcón verified that the Israelis had in their possession nine hand grenades, sticks of dynamite, detonators, wiring and two 9mm "Glock" automatics. Mexican Congressional Press Secretary Lic. Adriana Lopez informed La Voz de Aztlan in the telephone interview that Congressional Security then turned the terrorists Salvador Guersson Smecke, age 34, and Saur Ben Zvi, age 27, to the Procuraduría General de la República (Mexican Department of Justice) which is headed by Mexican Army General Rafael Marcial Macedo de la Concha. Initial reports by the Procuraduría General de la República (PGR) were that both Israelis worked for a private security agency and that they both had gun permits. It turned out that there is no connection of either suspect to any private security agency. The PGR has released the retired Israeli I.D.F. colonel with the official explanation that he had a legal permit to carry a gun. They also released the illegal Israeli immigrant on about $4000 bail and the case turned over to the Mexican immigration authorities. Mexican Congressional Press Secretary Lic. Adriana Lopez was surprised to hear from La Voz de Aztlan of the release of the two Israelis. La Voz de Aztlan has also learned that the Israeli Embassy used heavy handed measures to have the two Israelis released. Very high level emergency meetings took place between Mexican Secretary of Foreign Relations Jorge Gutman, General Macedo de la Concha and a top Ariel Sharon envoy who flew to Mexico City specially for that purpose. Elías Luf of the Israeli Embassy worked night and day and their official spokeswoman Hila Engelhart went into high gear after may hours of complete silence. What went one during those high levels meetings no ones knows, but many in Mexico are in disbelief at their release. Guns and any kind of explosive is highly illegal for Mexican citizens and the fact that these two Israelis had them inside the Mexican Congress makes their release highly suspect. What is really going on? Jorge Gutman, the Mexican Foreign Secretary, has very strong Zionist connections and himself is of Jewish descent. Mexican Army General Macedo de la Concha has strong connections to the U.S. Military Industrial-Complex and through this to the Israeli Defense Forces. Have any of these connections influenced the decision to release the two Zionist terrorists? The initial arrests of the two Israelis inside the Palacio Legislativo de San Lázaro made top news on Mexico City television and radio on the evening of October 10. TV Azteca had extensive coverage on the first night and on the following day. La Cronica de Hoy Newspaper and El Universal Newspaper both covered the incident the following two days but now it seems that there is a lack of reports. The PGR has a Press Bulletin on their official website at but they have made no updates. We think we know. The Vicente Fox government has been very careful of involving Mexico in a war against Islam. The Mexican population as well as the two major opposition political parties, the PRI and the PRD will not allow it. President Bush and the U.S. Zionists want Mexico fully involved in the war principally because if things get tough in the middle east and the oil rich Arabs leave the coalition, the U.S. military machine is going to need alternative sources of oil and PEMEX is just across the border. We believe that the two Zionists terrorist were going to blow up the Mexican Congress. The second phase was to mobilize both the Mexican and US press to blame Osama bin Laden. But more than just bootlegging is going on there, according to international intelligence sources. Sources told CNN they believe the tri-border area is being used as a haven and source of funding for terrorists linked to Iran's Party of God and to organizations that work closely with Osama bin Laden. In Ciudad del Este, on the Paraguayan side of the Parana River, the commercial district is a mosaic of businesses owned mostly by Arab merchants. International and regional intelligence sources said those businesses and a mosque in the city serve as a revolving door for Islamic extremists. Across the river in Foz do Iguacu, Brazil, two more mosques are suspected of involvement in terrorist activity. Argentine intelligence documents obtained by CNN map out what the intelligence sources said are links between the mosques and a laundry list of terror groups. They include Egypt's Al-Gama'at al-Islamiyya and Lebanese Hezbollah, both identified by the U.S. State Department as terrorist organizations linked to Osama bin Laden, and Egyptian Islamic Jihad, linked to Iran's Imad Mughniyah, who is on theU.S. list of most wanted terrorists. Alleged front for Hezbollah Argentine and Paraguayan prosecutors have identified another man, Assad Ahmad Barakat, as the regional operative for the Shiite extremist organization Hezbollah. The prosecutors believe Barakat, who is on the run after an international warrant was issued against him last month, is a major player in the 1992 bombing of the Israeli Embassy in Buenos Aires and in the 1994 bombing of the Jewish Community Center in the Argentine capital. Barakat is co-owner of Galeria Page, one of Ciudad del Este's biggest shopping malls, which intelligence sources said they believe he has used as a front for raising funds and recruiting volunteers for Hezbollah. And Argentine police are seeking one of his tenants in the mall, Samuel Salman Al Reda Reda, for his alleged involvement in the Buenos Aires embassy bombing. Ten days after the September 11 attacks, Paraguayan police raided several businesses in Ciudad del Este, rounding up 20 suspects, 14 of whom were later released. On a second raid in October, Paraguayan police attempted to capture Barakat, who evaded arrestand is believed to be hiding in Brazil or to haveescaped to Lebanon. Link between pirated CDs, terrorism alleged Two of his associates, Mazen Ali Saleh and Saleh Mahoud Fayoud, were arrested and charged with falsifying immigration documents and dealing in pirated compact discs. Prosecutor Carlos Calcenas said he believes the pirate CD business is underwriting terrorist activities and that Barakat is just one of dozens of Arab merchants who operate fronts in the tri-border region for terrorism-related activities. To make their case, prosecutors pointed to hundreds of millions of dollars of transactions that they said are used to support terrorism. Bank documents obtained by CNN show money transfers made by Barakat's associates to banks in New York. Spokesman: Arabs 'unfairly targeted' Leaders of the local Arab community denied the businesses are fronts for terror organizations and said they are unfairly targeted because they are Arabs. The spokesman for the Arab community in Ciudad del Este, Samir Jebai, insisted his community has nothing to do with international terrorism. "We came here fleeing the war in 1973 in Lebanon," he said, noting he wanted to be in a country where he could study, work and raise a family in peace. "This is a very small community, where we all know each other, and if there was some activity, we would know about it. We trust the investigation and are ready to help in any way we can." Sheik Munir Fahdel is the leader of Ciudad del Este's Prophet Mohamed Mosque, one of the mosques accused by Argentine intelligence of being associated with Hezbollah. He said he is angry at the accusations and said Hezbollah is a legitimate religious and political organization. Paraguayan intelligence sources said they had been warning the United States about the activities of Middle East terror groups in the tri-border region for more than a year. Zeevi was a hated ultra right wing politician and former general of the Israeli Armed Forces that was fond of calling the Palestinians "lice" and a cancer on the body of Israel. The 74 year old former major-general, who headed the far-right National Union Party advocated the expulsion of all Arabs from 1948 Palestine as well as the expulsion of the 3 million Palestinians from the West Bank and Gaza Strip. He would often go on anti-Palestinian tirades and recently was quoted on Israeli radio as saying, "They [referring to Palestinians] arrived here and are trying to become citizens because they want social security and welfare payments". La Voz de Aztlan is intrigued at how similar these comments are to some that are said here in the United States against La Raza. Instead of being called "lice", we are often called "cucarachas" by anti-Mexican bigots. There is a very interesting article going back to September 1996 in which a Michael Eisner radio station was being used to attack Mexican immigrants in a similar way. The article was written by Impacto 2000, a civil rights groups, and is presently published on their website at http://www.serve.com/Impacto/heckler.html The anti-Mexican bigot Bob Heckler was fond of bashing immigrants coming through the San Ysidro/Tijuana border to work on this side. In one occasion he broadcasted the following ""there were these masses of Mexicans coming over the border like a bunch of COCKROACHES" and "the Militias should just shoot and kill these illegal Mexicans as they come over the border". Mr. Heckler was supported by vehement anti-Mexican groups like American Patrol which is lead by bigot Glenn Spencer. Mr. Zeevi was also quoted as saying "We should get rid of the ones who are not Israeli citizens the same way you get rid of lice. We have to stop this cancer from spreading within us". In addition, Zeevi wanted Israel to lay claim to the kingdom of Jordan. "It's ours historically. Three of the tribes of Israel - Gad, Reuven, and Menashe, lived in what is now Jordan," he has stated in the past. Mr. Zeevi, who was 74 years old had recently resigned from the Ariel Sharon government because he felt that Sharon was not being tough enough against the Palestinians. He wanted absolutely no concessions for peace and advocated the extermination of the Palestinian in a similar way that Hitler wanted to exterminate the Jews. There are Middle East analysts that believe that Zeevi may have been assassinated by other Zionists because they found him expandable and then framed the PFLP. On the morning of September 11, Katie Couric of NBC News reported that the PFLP had taken credit for the WTC attack which was later refuted. Presently there is great pressure on Israel by the United States to concede on the formation of an independent Palestine and return of occupied territories. The Zionists needed to create a situation in order to relieve the great pressure and to find a new excuse to attack the Palestinians. This has now happened. Today the Israeli Defense Forces used this as an excuse to attack Palestinian towns including a Palestinian girl elementary school were one girl was killed and many other students injured. Quito, Ecuador, Nov. 7 (IPS)— Ecuador’s concession of an air and naval base to the United States for its “fight against the drug trade” could increase the impact of the civil war in Colombia on this neighboring nation, say concerned lawmakers, retired military officers and civil society leaders.The president of the International Relations Committee in the parliament, Hugo Morena, called on the Defense and Foreign Relations ministers and on military commanders to explain, on Nov 8, the implications of the concession of the Manta base to the United States. For her part, religious leader Elsie Monge, president of the Ecumenical Commission on Human Rights, stated that the Manta base agreement is unconstitutional because the Ecuadorian Congress did not approve it. The flow of Colombian refugees into Ecuador, instigated by fighting between leftist guerrillas, right-wing paramilitaries and the army in areas near the border, has fuelled fears here that the country is being drawn into the Colombian civil war. The alarm grew more intense when an unconfirmed rumor began to circulate that Colombian paramilitaries were setting up camps in Ecuadorian territory. The presence of the US military at Manta, according to critics of the agreement, is drawing Ecuador into involvement in ‘Plan Colombia,’ though the government of President Gustavo Noboa refutes such assertions. Plan Colombia is an initiative of President Andrés Pastrana, with support from the United States, to step up the fight against drug trafficking and foment alternative development in drug-producing regions in Colombia. But the guerrillas argue that its military component targets them, and Colombia’s neighbors have reinforced their own military presence in border areas to prevent the conflict from spilling across into their territories. “Ecuador is already involved in a conflict that is becoming regional,’’ stated Lt. Col. Edison Sánchez, who in January backed the indigenous uprising against the government of Jamil Mahuad, who was deposed by the military. Sánchez then passed into retirement. In 1999, Sánchez and other military leaders from the Ecuadorian Army War School were entrusted with drafting a report on the possible scenarios that would be created in the country by ceding the Manta base, as well as the implications of taking part in Plan Colombia. The lieutenant colonel said that his conclusions, which were against US presence at Manta, were not taken into account by the Ecuadorian military’s top brass. The agreement that grants use of the base to the US armed forces was signed by Mahuad and current foreign minister Heinz Moeller, then president of the International Affairs Committee in the Ecuadorian Congress. It was not brought before the full Congress, or before public opinion, until after it was signed, but the Noboa government has upheld the document’s validity. The Confederation of Indigenous Nationalities of Ecuador, numerous social and non-governmental organizations, and several political parties filed a lawsuit with the Constitutional Court charging the agreement is unconstitutional. “The accord was signed in violation of constitutional norms and without citizen discussion or participation,’’ said Gilberto Talahua, president of the Committee on Indigenous Affairs in parliament. The agreement authorizes the United States to utilize “the base of the Ecuadorian Air Force at Manta, as well as the Port of Manta and installations related to the base or in its vicinity.’’ In addition, US military personnel are exonerated of “all import and export procedures, tariffs, direct and indirect taxes and other charges that Ecuador would otherwise impose on products, equipment, material, provisions and other goods exported or imported in relation to this accord.’’ The US armed forces have already begun work to expand and reinforce the capacities of the Manta installations at a cost of 80 million dollars, to be financed by Washington. The US ambassador to Ecuador, Gwen Clair, said that once the work is done, “as many as three aircraft’’ of the US air force would land at the Manta base each week. According to Clair, the improvements of the landing strip “will foment interest among foreign airlines to work with that terminal,’’ and thus improve the Manta area’s tourism and commercial sectors. Col. Jorge Brito, one of Ecuador’s chief military strategists in the 1995 war against Peru and who received training at the US Army School of the Americas, commented that the base is part of the “regionalization’’ of the Colombian conflict and is closely tied to Plan Colombia. Brito also said he is concerned about the military implications of the agreement.
