In the past I have made it a habit to go to the library and check on the financial stability of the company. This year they no longer have that book in the reference section. Do you know any sources of the web or otherwise to check out how strong these insurance companies are in the event of a claim? This company was bought out by entergy 15 to 20 years ago,then he stopped getting statements. Provided the purchase was properly registered, the owner should be recorded on the company's stock book. I'd start with the company's corporate shareholder services (investor relations) rep and/or transfer agent. She recommended a caller purchase AAA rate insured zero coupon municipal bonds. A resident of California, the caller was retired and had $100,000 and didn't need current income. Orman thought this option would be better than long-term certificates of deposit because the municipal bonds have favorable tax treatment. Orman also mentioned the bond ladder approach. Although, I don't have nearly that amount, I am interested in the municipal bond option for myself as I live in California as well. Is there a minimum amount where this option makes sense? How does one go about purchasing these municipal bonds?
