Thanks Rande, I am going to add that article to my DavidK primer on the subject. Seems like all these indicators work at some point, but not all the times. Best not to fall in love with any of them (i.e. ARMS, put/call, Investors Intelligence, yada yada, where's my pinyada).

» gorby - Rydex Funds

Rande---------Can you tell me if it is legal to own both the Rydex Velocity and the Rydex Venture Funds at the same time? I guess you could say I've used one as a hedge at various times.

Thanks, gorby

Legal yes... You seem to just net out your position with a nice donation to the fund managers.

Perhaps you might want to ask about what you can claim on your taxes?

In response to message posted by gorby:

gorby,

Why would it be illegal to own publicly-traded mutual funds in any combination? As for any adverse tax consequences, the two funds held together could be considered offsetting positions in the same security and therefore fall under the straddle rules, but that would depend on the underlying investments. Under the straddle rules, you must defer any loss on one position until both positions are disposed of.

» DavidWShane - 1040-ES

Rande, I have submitted 1040-ES payment vouchers 1,2, and 3 for the first three quarters of 2001. I now find that based on what I've sent to IRS and what has been withheld, we have no further tax liability. Since I've sent the first three vouchers, should I go ahead and send in # 4 showing "no liability", or simply not send in the voucher at all. Probably a question much lower than your pay grade deserves, but I'm obsessing about this, and can't find anything specifically applicable in the instructions. Thanks, David

» gorby - Rydex

Thanks Kirk and Rande---------These funds were owned in different amounts and one was used only periodically, but you were correct about them offsetting when owned at the same time.
I'll check out the straddle rules.

In response to message posted by DavidWShane:

David,

So long as you've met your estimated individual income tax obligation there's no need to send in the 4Q voucher. I'd just toss it. If anything, the IRS should say "thank you" for sending in more payment than you had to earlier on.
