As for any adverse tax consequences, the two funds held together could be considered offsetting positions in the same security and therefore fall under the straddle rules, but that would depend on the underlying investments. Under the straddle rules, you must defer any loss on one position until both positions are disposed of. -- posted by Rande » DavidWShane - 1040-ES Rande, I have submitted 1040-ES payment vouchers 1,2, and 3 for the first three quarters of 2001. I now find that based on what I've sent to IRS and what has been withheld, we have no further tax liability. Since I've sent the first three vouchers, should I go ahead and send in # 4 showing "no liability", or simply not send in the voucher at all. Probably a question much lower than your pay grade deserves, but I'm obsessing about this, and can't find anything specifically applicable in the instructions. So long as you've met your estimated individual income tax obligation there's no need to send in the 4Q voucher. I'd just toss it.
