The thing that makes Suite101 so great is the sharing and the learning, by everyone for everyone (well, almost everyoneBTW -- Reporter, there is an overall annual IRC statutory limit on "elective deferrals" (which include both employee and employer contributions) which has to be coordinated between all qualified plans. The limit for defined contribution plans was 25% ($170K max salary limitation) or $30,000 in 2000, but I believe that's set to go up under the new tax law. Have to double-check. Anyway, the formulas get really complex when both defined benefit and defined contribution plans are included. As to whether you should do an IRA or the employer plan for this year, I'd do whichever allows you to contribute the most and provides the best tax benefit. -- posted by Rande » reporter20 - Re: Thanks all. Not a worry given to Mr Mrkt. be- cause smart guys like you have taught me the virtue of tuning out the noise, and executing a simple boring investment plan. Much thanx. Gad- -- posted by Gadfly » DennisL - Congratulations and Thanks Rande,I was out most of the day today helping to raise some money for my favorite charity, so I am very late to this party. What more can I say that others haven't already said about your gracious giving of your time here, your intelligent and prudent advice, and your tireless efforts to educate all of us? Even on those days that I don't have the time to plow through all of the threads and all of the posts here, I do make it a point to read "Ask Rande," if nothing else. You have taught me many invaluable lessons about investing and personal finance. For that, I am most appreciative. Sincere congratulations on 10,000 posts. Thank you for being a good friend and a wonderful mentor...for being our friendly professor.
