» Rob_Larsen - Looking up bonds

Hi Rande,

I have completed a class paper on bonds. I chose GE because I hold the stock and has the largest market cap. The other reason I chose GE was the ease of finding data for different projects as this particular university course progresses. I need to find out about a a particular bond that GE issued but I can't seem to find it using my normal Internet sources. I looked at http://www.bondsonline.com, but I get a reply that my criteria can't be found. I don't have access to a Bloomberg Machine so I tried Bloomberg.com but came up with nothing there either. The security number is 5200189 or CUSIP # 36962GWP50730.

Do you know of any web sites that will allow me to plug in the security number and locate information on that particular bond?

Thanks for your help.

Rob Larsen

Rob,

No Blooomberg terminal on campus? Try just putting in "36962" into the CUSIP field in the corporate search section at bondsonline.com, nothing else, and select up to 50 issues. I came up with 44 GE bonds, through 2016 maturity date. Let me know if you find yours (you didn't list maturity date and coupon in your post and I don't have the time to check through each one for CUSIP).

BTW, here's a good list of links to a bunch of bond sites:

Lots of great bond links. One of the links there is a good general bond site:

Good luck.

In response to message posted by Rande:About all I have to offer is wisecracks, but now that was pretty impressive. There is probably some formula which evaluates utilization of the work force based on how much help people give. Do they know you are helping others instead of working?

Paul

I'd suggest watching your own output and keeping the wisecracks to yourself or take them over to the yahoo drivel site here: http://messages.yahoo.com/bbs?.mm=FN&act...

Please keep to the topic of the threads at this site unless you are on the "Chit Chat" thread.

If you want your own thread to post to your hearts content, we can arrange that also.

Paul,

Well, today I'm taking the day off, but typically I put in between 10-12 hours during the course of the average workday. That gives me plenty of time to help out here, deal with media inquiries, do research on general issues, etc. Thanks for asking.

» Gadfly - VTSMX conversion to VTI, partial VTI sale, basis headache.....

On 6/21 I converted my VTSMX fund to VTI shares.
On the morning of 11/16 I sold a portion of the
VTI shares. How do I compute the cost basis for
the sold VTI? My thought is to use FIFO based on
the dollar amount, going back to the VTSMX pur-
chases. I sold the VTI in the morning, making
the determination of the equivalent VTSMX closing
day price perplexing at best. Maybe the IRS will
decide it's too complicated and just give me a
pass.8)

Thanx,

In response to message posted by Gadfly:

Gad,

You would apply holding period and cost basis at the point of conversion, so the price of VTSMX from that point forward wouldn't matter. Could get fairly complex if you had many different tranches of the original VTSMX and were automtically reinvesting distributions, but let's assume you had just two tranches to keep things simple for illustration purposes.

Say you bought $5,000 worth of VTSMX on 1/2/00 and $5,000 worth on 1/2/01. Then you converted the whole thing to VTI on 6/21/01 when the the total position was worth $8,000. Also assume VTI was selling for $100 per share at the time so you got 80 new shares. So, your new VTI would have a cost basis of $125/share (total $10,000) -- 40 with a purchase date of 1/2/00 and 40 with a purchase date of 1/2/01.

Obviously, gets a little more complex when different dollar amounts were originally invested (or reinvested) at many different times prior to conversion, but the key is to apply total original cost basis and separate by holding period. Vanguard shareholder services should be able to provide some guidance.
