In response to message posted by gorby:gorby, As a straight commodity play, all I can say is that somewhere around 90% of all commodity speculators lose. You're up against players who have multi-billion dollar resources and like to eat small investors for lunch. If you're looking for a sector play using ETFs, you can probably find one to fit the bill between the HOLDRs, the iShares, etc. I'd keep it to a minimum (zero being my own preference). Think lottery ticket. -- posted by Rande » Rande - Re: Wash? In response to message posted by mitelo:Kirk's got it right. You can sell the whole 300 shares and take a short-term loss so long as you don't reaquire the shares within 30 days before or after the sale (total 61 day window including the actual date of sale -- i.e., wait until the 31st day after sale to repurchase if you're so inclined). For reporting purposes, I'd just put it on one line in the short-term section of Sch. D, using total cost and proceeds for all 300, actual date of sale, and "VAR" for date of purchase. Or, you could break it out by purchase lot and prorate total proceeds (more work). In any event, keep your original confirmations with the file copy of your tax return. -- posted by Rande » TonyFromGlendale - Ginny and VG Total Bond Mkt. Index Greetings Rande,As refi's will probably hit some new record highs in the near future even beyond the refi-boom of late, do you have an opinion about moving bond funds from Vg GNMA to the Vg Total Bond Index Fund (that you have expressed an appreciation for in the past) right now at this time? Thank You!!! -- posted by TonyFromGlendale » Rande - Re: Ginny and VG Total Bond Mkt. Index In response to message posted by TonyFromGlendale:
I don't think it will make a lot of difference over the long term. My preference is always for more diversification as opposed to less, without regard to timing. In that respect, it's always the "right time" to establish an all-weather approach you can live with and then just stick with it. -- posted by Rande » gorby - Thanks Jen! Jen-----Thanks for moving my post to the energy board!I think I'll take Rande's advice and stick to an occaisional lottery ticket. I've had a lot going on this year, so there has been little internet time available; but when I do get on, I always make a stop at BOWG. Thanks, Gorby -- posted by gorby » Rande - Re: RD bid for ENE In response to message posted by collguy:collguy, The WSJ article the other day on Enron being a takeover candidate was sure spot on. There was some talk about Berkshire Hathaway and even GE Capital having some interest and speculation even that Shell and Enron had signed a confidentiality agreement to trade financial information. Acctoding to TSC, Shell wants to expand its gas business, its bid for Barrett Resources showing it will pay a premium for the right assets. But Enron is more an energy trading company than an exploration and production company and Shell has already had problems growing both its Coral trading subsidiary and its Tejas Gas unit. Also, Shell and Enron appear to be very different culturally. Assuming there is a deal of $11 billion and 750 million shares outstanding, that would be around $14.67/share. More than the current $11/share and change, but could be less than the folks at Enron think their stock might be worth in better times. Here's a piece from CBSM on the rumor: http://cbs.marketwatch.com/news/story.as... Shell Reportedly Plans Enron Bid -- posted by Rande » Mark_J - ENE and 49ers I heard a caller to the Rob Black Stock Talk show (CNET radio) call himself a "contrarian by nature" and that he was buying all the ENE he could under $20. It was about $18 at the time. He's taken a bath. Tough to catch a falling knife, especially if a company is under review for any irregularities! The volume is still very high on ENE. No reason to buy anyways until the selling is done. IMHO. And maybe a good rule of thumb is to just avoid gambling on companies under review for irregularities!!! Why bother? Too many good companies out there.Have a good time at the 49ers game. Remember, you can still listen to 860 am from 2-5pm this afternoon! A day at the ballgame doesn't have to be a day away from BOB!
