» ed_from_chico - Gnma share price fluctuates moderately?

In response to message posted by CaptRon:

CaptRon, thanks for the chart showing a 10 year fluctuation of 10% or so in Vanguard's GNMA fund. You have a good thought considering we're at the top (or very near the top) of valuation now.

I wonder how the Vanguard GNMA fund's fluctuation of share price compares to the fluctuation of share price for a bond fund containing U.S. backed bonds of similar maturities? Or throw out the "backed by the U.S. government part"; how about comparing the share price fluctuations of a high quality corporate bond fund with similar maturities to Vanguard's GNMA fund? I'd be interested to know if you have any data on these comparisons, or where I could find them myself.

My thought for a senior citizen (not that anyone's mother-in-law is necessarily a senior citizen) is that anyone old enough to have been traumatized by hard times during the Great Depression (or perhaps whose family members suffered) may appreciate the relative safety and the sense of security they feel by owning bonds backed by the United States Government. And there may be others who just want the security of a U.S. backed bond too.

Of course, anyone who couldn't stand the share price fluctuations in the Vanguard GNMA fund or someone with a short time horizon might investigate a quality money market fund.

Thanks,

- Ed

In response to message posted by Rande:

Rande, thanks for the breakdown of the Total Bond Market index fund and your explanation that diversification is the tie-breaker for you. It certainly looks like a great bond fund to me.
I'd invest in it feeling confident about its safety.

My thought was that some may appreciate the security they feel by knowing their bond fund is 100% backed by the U.S. Government. I know folks who have that level of concern about their investments.

In response to message posted by Kirk:

I the "ride down" in XLK has been less severe then in QQQ during the downswing. Although, potentially, QQQ will also go up more then XLK during the next upswing.

But the main thing is having a diversified portfolio, rather then concentrate on one sector of the market. I do like the strategy of having the bulk of one's assets in the W5000, and then using a smaller percentage to try and find some stocks that potentially could outperform the market index.

Regarding HWP and CPQ... I don't think the merger is going to happen. JMHO.

Mark,

Good stuff on the idea of "core and explore." Also true about XLK vs. QQQ -- less bang for the buck in both directions. Exactly what any prudent investor would be looking for should they decide to "explore."

In response to message posted by ed_from_chico:

ed,

Yes, there's varying degrees of comfort level. And the good thing is that the market is accomodating with something for everyon -- from money market funds to VC funds and everything in between. Even within the relatively conservative arena of fixed income, the choices range from certificates of deposits to corporate bonds to government agencies to U.S. Treasury-backed, or even "junk." Whatever gets you through the night.

rande, i'm aware of the ususal strategies to avoid triggering the wash sale provisions.

any problems with selling a stock from a "joint" taxable account and immediately repurchasing it in "my" tax deferred account without triggering the wash sale rules?
