» dewam - not always the same old thing

Rande: I live in an area that has spectacular scenery, and soon become accustom to it. Then something happens and I notice all the beautiful things again with renewed interest. I suspect that may happen with all the thanks you receive. I know I could have researched and found the answer, but it is nice to ask a friend. thanks Den

» TonyFromGlendale - I Bonds

With my girlfriend Ginny Mae I let the interest ride and buy more shares with V'Guard. What happens with interest on I-Bonds? Is it paid to the bond holder or accumulates or how does it work?

Thank you Rande for the information.

Tony,

Although I-Bonds are purchased at face value, ss with any savings bond the interest accrues to redemption or maturity, whichever comes first. You can elect to report the interest earned as you go under the accrual method, but most would prefer to report under the cash basis method and defer the tax. Here's some good links on I-Bonds.

Den - you said....

I live in an area that has spectacular scenery, and soon become accustom to it. Then something happens and I notice all the beautiful things again with renewed interest.

I've been thinking that also - the 9/11 attacks have tended to sharpen our appreciation of the world around us.... friends, family, nature all seem that much more important....because we don't know what tomorrow will bring. The other night while walking along a river at sunset - the bright red shimmery reflection on the river seemed lika a veritable fleeting masterpiece..... I just wanted to stop, drink it in, commit it to memory.

When I was freaking out in the aftermath of the attacks ready to give up any and all civil liberties in return for a greater sense of national security ....you said.....

To give up our rights for a little more security is futile, and a win for the terrorists. Nothing is ever secure. Lets face it the most dangerous thing you, and your family do, is drive, or is that going down stairs. As bin Laudin has shown your allies can soon turn into your enemies. Today the government is your allie. Tomorrow? If you wish more security take the necessary steps (arm yourself, move to a small town, store food etc.) but please, think twice before you so easily give up my rights as an American citizen. Remember those who have died to provide those rights. What will happen when millions die, if you are willing to give up so much now? A mother has to protect her family, yet she has to do what is necessary to see that they are prepared for life without mother. Live for now, prepare for the future.

Wise words indeed.....I think 9/11 has caused us all to live a little more for the now and prepare a little more for the future.......Jen

» dewam - I Bonds another good link

In response to message posted by Rande:

A couple years ago I did a lot of research on I-Bonds and posted a small article on the bond thread. Since then I refer all inquiries to the diehard thread on morningstar. There is quite a lot of discussion on that thread about I-Bonds. The treasury site people even get on and correct mistakes every so often. Here is a link to the best "tutorial" I have read on I-Bonds.

http://socialize.morningstar.com/NewSoci...

In the preview I cannot get the link to work so you have to go to the Morningstar Vanguard Diehards site

http://socialize.morningstar.com/NewSoci...

then enter discussion 6315 on the "jump to #" window.

If you have any questions on I-Bonds the folks on the Vanguard Diehards site can and do answer them. Den

Rande,

Here is a link that list the components for almost every index known to man. Didn't know where else to post it so it must go into the "Rande has that info..." file. smile

Great link!

I like XLK because it has some stocks that actually make money like IBM, HWP and even Compaq.
I noticed that HWP+Compaq is larger than Dell so it will be interesting if they make a change when/if HWP swallows CPQ.
