The IRS presumes FIFO in the absence of specific identification, so the sale would default to the first 100 shares purchased, resulting in a realized capital loss. However, since you created a substantially identical position within 30 days of sale, the loss would be disallowed for tax recognition purposes. The disallowed loss would be added to the cost basis of the replacement securities, in effect deferring recognition of the loss until those shares are sold. In the meantime, you would report the wash sale on your 2001 return on Line 1 of Sch D (since it's short term), showing the full amount of the loss in parentheses in column (f). On the next line, enter "Wash Sale" in column (a) and the amount of the loss not allowed as a positive in column (f). I've never been to any Yahoo! chat rooms, but from what I've heard and the bits and pieces I've seen, it reminds me of the worst of AOL when I subscribed to that service back in the early/mid-90s (actually subscribed to a precursor back in the mid-80s when all I had was an old Apple IIGS). Pretty much a useless mishmash that borders on a cesspool at times. The goal of Suite101 is a good one, and pretty simple -- provide a forum for the sharing of information, where people can find a community of like-minded individuals interested in learning from each other. But, let's face it, there is an entertainment aspect. And there will always be no shortage of strange and angry people out there, seemingly, who tend to do and say things they might not otherwise do and say were they face-to-face with another human being instead of posting over the Net. A small price to pay for a great place like Suite101, really. Thanks for your help in this regard! -- posted by Kirk » Erik75 - Mother-In-Law question for Rande Rande, My 78 year old MIL just got a letter form her former employer stating that her pension was being increased from about $400/month to about $600/month plus she will get a lump sum payment of a bit over $20k because of an error in the way they handled her pension calculations before she retired. Kinda made her day.She was doing OK on her income before this so this is gravy for her. What would be some good options to maximize her income off the $20k while still giving a good level of security. She is a very healthy 78 and her mother lived to 95 so she shouldn't draw down the principal too fast. Some kind of fixed lifetime annuity? Intermediate govt. bond fund of some kind? VBMFX?
