I know BB has explained this before, but please refresh my memory. Kind of interesting it was high when the market was lower and lower now after an up move. I guess that is why this a contrary indicator. -- posted by SteveT » JenL_3 - Here is a good explanation of bulls/bears sentiment copied from Here is a good explanation of bulls/bears sentiment copied from the B.B. site:To: Greg Mercurio From Pete from Stamford, CT (10-03-98) msg#2309: "Greg: Brinker only follows sentement per INVESTORS INTELLIGENCE which represents investment advisors (GURUs) Bullish/Bearish....He is included in the survey as a Bull. The ratio followed is the 4-wk moving ave. of %Bulls divided by the sum of (% Bulls + % Bears). When the % Bulls gets close to 70% bullish, it usually indicates a correction is coming soon. When the Bullish% dips into the low 40's, it usually indicates a bottom is near. The theory is when most advisors are bearish (low % bulls), the bearish advisors and their followers are all out of the market and can't affect the market adverely by further selling. The reverse is when there us a high % if bulls (ie. Such bullish advisors and their followers are fully invested in the market, thus exhausting further demand for stocks. The statistic is reported in Barrons each wk. It is also first reported in Investors Business Daily on Thursdays under "psychological indicators" as a graph. Hope this helps your understanding. J.L. -- posted by JenL_3 » JenL_3 - % Bulls and % Bears Market Edge reports percentages of Bullish and Bearish Investment Advisors as reported by Investors Intelligence at this link:http://www.stkwtch.com/MarketEdge/help/L... Today's percentages are: Bullish Investment Advisors - 36.90% Bearish Investment Advisors - 39.70% (So according to the formula: Sentiment # = %Bulls/(%Bulls=%Bears) = 36.90%/(36.90%+39.70%) = 48.2%.) I hope this link is updated daily, so it can be an updated source of % Bulls and % Bears figures, from which to calculate sentiment #. J.L. -- posted by JenL_3 » JenL_3 - Source of Sentiment #s Kirk - But the question is, are Marc's CNBC sentiment #s coming from Investors Intelligence? I e-mailed Market Edge, and they replied that their sentiment #s are updated every Fri., so we are looking at last week's numbers in my above post. But that still doesn't agree with the CNBC numbers. Have noticed in web searches that there are more than one way to calculate "sentiment" #s.According to Pete's post above (copied over from the BB discussion site), BB's model uses %Bull and %Bear figures as reported in Investors Intelligence. We need a corroborating source. Does anyone get Barrons or Investors Business Daily, who also post sentiment # weekly as reported in Investors Intelligence? We'll get to the bottom of this.
