» Kirk - Re: Re: Lower close on lower volume

In response to message posted by cmag1:

Yeah, I was sort of afraid of that myself. I didn't see relative strength anywhere as the SOX was taken out and shot with all the other stocks.

It had the feel of our "Rally two days and then tank lower for three days" pattern where we end up lower on Friday. Perhaps the Friday action will be telling? Do people want to go home long or not? Last week we finally had an up Friday so a 2nd might be a nice change.

It does look like many stocks HAVE bottomed and are now trading range bound. These are stocks I think will lead us out into the next bull market or counter trend rally... but we might need to see the megacaps stop going down on bad news to think the whole market has a chance to bottom. Right now, we have JDSU warning then Cisco drops 10%, then NT warns and Cisco drops 10%, then xyz warns and Cisco drops 10%... Hard for people to get so excited about the market when one of the biggest companies that had the best performance is still getting hammered on a daily basis.

That Liebovit is a joke. He gives himself so much room "in the work that he does"( I hate that self-righteous phrase), that he can't possibly be wrong. How can he be accurately jugded when he is all over the map. Cripes, Liebo, make a stand and stick with it, ya jerk. What a conceited phony.

In response to message posted by Kirk:

Maybe we get a washout in the early AM and then another of those up 8% days to close?

Perhaps there was not much left to "wash out"?

My screen is now showing green and two of my major positions got downgraded today (AMAT and LRCX) and the earnings downgrades were even posted on CNBC in writing! They are now up 3% today. <img src=http://www.suite101.com/images/emoteicon... width=13 height=12>

One stock I bought in January is now back into the green (and I sold some HWP to raise the cash to buy it when HWP was 20% higher so that paid the tax for me!). Thanks again to Ron and Dan for the TA education as that was a falling knife catch and I waited for the TA to signal a buy. We did get a retest of the Dec lows so I saw my stock go negative for a bit, but not by enough to hit my next buy level which is amazing. I am becoming a believer that the TA can help increase your overall return by keeping your hands from getting so bloody knife catching.

Thanks again!

Donald: Your NDX 1600 break thesis is supported by breakdown of stalwarts like QCOM, CIEN, JNPR, BEAS and CSCO yesterday. Pressure on these is continuing in premarket. Window dressing pressure to dump any tech at any price at this point should pressure NDX. Sox could join the party if MU report tonight does not satisfy. Also, some analyst is downgrading the chip equipment companies today. Sox looks poised to go down a bit.
Broader Nasdaq is another issue. Will be interesting to see if 1790 and change holds.

Always wondered where he ended up....

» Richard_Palm - Some Thoughts on "Bottoming"

I was looking at some charts this morning and found a pitfall in the way I was interpreting them. On a three month chart of QQQ, I have been noticing that it looks like the downward slope was reducing, making it appear that it has been starting to form a broad bottom.

http://www.bigcharts.com/intchart/frames...

But then it occurred to me that maybe what was really going on is that it has been going down by a constant percentage per unit of time, which would mean that the mitigation of the downward slope was merely a byproduct of the fact that the price is lower than it used to be, and a constant percentage of a lower price is a smaller drop. Put another way, we could be looking at an exponential curve, which has the characteristic that its slope is always decreasing but never goes to zero. To test this idea, I replotted it on logarithmic scale:

http://www.bigcharts.com/intchart/frames...

Holding a straightedge up to the screen, we can see that it is a pretty straight decline since the end of January, with maybe a slight reduction in slope in the last few days, but it is impossible to tell yet whether this is just another blip.

One of the remarkable things about the decline of the past two months is its gradual, inexorable nature. It's been like a slow moving freight train. I've been standing on the tracks looking at the locomotive bear down on me, and wondering if it's going to stop. Each time it hits me, I get tossed a little farther down the tracks, at which point I stand up and wonder if it's going to stop. Each time, there has been plenty of time to get out of the way, but instead it's been wham, plop, wham, plop, wham, plop.

It's the triumph of hope over experience.

I tried to pick up a little more Hewlett-Packard by placing my GTC order yesterday at 29 1/2. Well, guess what the low was today--yep, 29.51! Dang! Missed it by one cent! I HATE these decimals!
