OK, so adding in the S&P500 dividends for the period 1967-1981 gives a compound annual rate of return of 7.11%. How does that help us today, when the S&P500 dividend yield is only (according to Yahoo) 1.1%? In order for dividend yield to get back to where it was in the 70's and 80's, the market would have to experience a HUGE drop. I submit that dividends would be cold comfort in that circumstance.
