Its performance has been outstanding. Bottom line is, scoreboard doesn't lie, and the 500 has scoreboard on what, 95% of the entire mutual fund universe? I think the S&P 400 mid cap index and the S&P 600 small cap index are as good ways to track those sectors of the market as any. I thought the Schwab 1000 acted very much like an index fund, with low portfolio turnover, and therefore, low cap gains distributions. What I'm missing is his reasons for thinking that we are potentially in the beginning of a very long period of tepid market returns at best. It really bothered me that he dodged the callers question about his reasons for MOABO, which David summarized extremely well.Mostly I DCA into index funds. I have no temptation to sell at the bottom and I'm feeling OK with the moderate losses I've had this year. But at the end of last year I read this article by Warren Buffet and it scared the **** out of me. Mr. Buffett on the Stock Market The other shocker was studying a constant-dollar DOW chart showing that we've just in the past few years exceeded the peak set in 1929 except for a brief period in the mid 60's. The long range trend is up, but just barely. This probably excludes dividends which might make a big difference over that amount of time. I was scraping the bottom edge of critical mass earlier this year. Now I'm quite a ways away, but that's no big deal because I love my work and want to do it for at least another decade. I have no problem riding out a couple years of down markets and then getting back to 10-12% returns. However - I will be a very unhappy camper if 10-15 years from now I'm at the same place I am now except for what I've managed to add through my own contributions. Does anybody else here have deep-seated fears that ultimately the average investor can't win in the markets?
