Joe B continues to be a bullish

http://www.gruntal.com/research/joeb.html

An excerpt:

We’ve talked in depth that the real critical factor is how well corporate earnings come across, which will be reported in earnest in the next couple of weeks.

While we officially forecast year-end Dow target of 12,000, Nasdaq Composite at 2,900, S&P 500 at 1,600, it may well overshoot those marks before year-end; we are expecting strength sooner than later.

Indeed, the correction in our judgement has come and gone. In conclusion, our bullish thesis remains intact.

I wonder if Don Lane at Silicon Investor still thinks I am clueless for saying the overall market doesn't matter as long as the proper sectors get the needed correction? It seems that JoeB agrees with me!

Ah, Abbey -- the voice of reason in the midst of the day-to-day angst. Come June 30, the mutual fund windows will be fully dressed and the FOMC will be a done deal till next time. Still holding out for new highs by mid-July....for now.

» KirkL - Great point, Rande

She is so good.

What I had forgotten about is the easy comparisons that companies will have for the next two quarters. People that invest on trailing 12 month p/e's (there are MANY) will start adding to many stocks that will get good comparisons. I used to make a mint trading HWP looking to add when they had crummy quarters as they get a nice kick after those quarters roll off the trailing 12 month earnings...

Also, when Y2K comes around and is history, the labor will go to productive uses and further add to earnings.

I still think we are highly vulnerable to a large correction, but those can come any time. It is just nice to have some ammo getting 6%+ while we wait.

» RandeS - Kirk,

Kirk,

I've heard Abby mention the "easy" year-over-year comparisons before. I don't quite get why this is supposed to be such a great positive, since "The Street" isn't blind to the fact that many cyclicals and export-dependent companies were in the doldrums last year or so. Might fool some uninformed investors, but they typically don't pay attention to details such as earnings anyway. ;)

» KirkL - Yes, it is funny

You would think most care about next yrs projected earnings and thus the easy projections are built in. Perhaps this is why Abby says we are fairly valued as she is using next yrs earnings? I guess nothing beats certain numbers rather than projections.

Also, perception is important to the momentum crowd so having "good comparisons" is good. They don't seem to join the party until the stock is moving up which usually comes after great news.
