Some just aren't suited to follow it too closely -- the ups and downs drive 'em nuts. Why not set your portfolio up with a diversified asset allocation and FORGET ABOUT IT -- enjoy the other things in life. Check in with the market once a year or so to see how you're doing. Or people could just come here and take your advice. Thanks for digging up yet another gem.The thing I liked about this piece it was easy to understand and made sense to me. Especially the part about the rubber band stretching and the reverberations lasting for awhile. Still many good values that will pay off, just a question of when. If politics are the motivation, wouldn't the Demo-leaning Fed govs want to keep the good times rolling for a few more months (even if it meant inflation down the line) so as not to upset the November elections? Doesn't make sense to me. But, the following does make sense and is on-point with our discussion about "changing realites": Greenspan, no troglodyte banker, is an agile economist with a shifting viewpoint. I do not believe the Federal Reserve is attempting to force the economy into a recession ahead of an election to control an inflation menace without considerable evidence of one existing. Against this backdrop, the consumer and producer price index data continue to show no troublesome signs of resurgent inflation. At present, the year-over-year core CPI and PPI have risen just 2.2% and 1.3% respectively. Both readings are in line with levels seen between 1992 and 1997. And you can get it if you try. -- posted by Jaybird248 » KLR - VIPERS Rande, I have approximately 22,000 shares of Vanguard Index Growth Fund in various accounts, both taxable and IRAs. I bought these through Schwab for ease even though a commission was paid. As you know, this is one of the funds for which VIPERs will be created and apparently I will have a one-time opportunity to convert the fund shares to VIPERs which I assume would be a tax-free exchange. I am inclined to exchange which would provide intra-day trading rather than market close only plus some small reduction in commissions. I am assuming that any dividends/distributions will be identical for the fund shares and the VIPERs. Can you seen any reason why it would not benefit me to exchange fund shares for VIPERs?-- posted by KLR » Rande - KLR, KLR,I'm not sure how you can get a tax-free exchange. Are they offering an in-kind transfer? The go-forward advantage with the Vipers would be lower expenses. Also, the potential for unleashed capital gains due to mass share redemptions (not something I would lose a lot of sleep over) would be a potential disadvantage associated with the mutual fund that the Vipers would not have. -- posted by Rande » Rande - Looks like the Nas is behaving well after hitting some significa Looks like the Nas is behaving well after hitting some significant intra-day levels. Those who were so inclined were able to pick up some QQQ as low as 75.5625 at one point. Got a few myself at 77 and 76. See how she closes. Meanwhile, looks like oil is finally moving in the right direction for a change:-- posted by Rande » SteveT - VIPERs This is sounding better the more I find out about it. Real time trading through out the day is a big advantage. I assume one could place limit orders, short, and buy options etc. Limit orders would be good for those that use VIPERs in IRAs and work during the time the market is open.
