Kirk I tuned in for the first half hour and found it to be a very good basic source of info. I liked what Rich said about the next several months being a stock pickers market. In short find sectors you think will do well and then pick leaders from that sector.

Another good bit of advice, buy quality and hold it. Don't sell unless something has changed to make you think the sector is ripe for a down turn. He also mention in reference to a caller the Super 8 portfolio has changed one stock over the last 3 or so years. Does not believe in churning your own account. Also mentioned the costs of doing so i.e. paying taxes. Good basic info imo.

» Kirk - Europe a Bargain

Jim took a call today asking about investing in Europe. He made a great point that the Euro is very low and buying stocks NOW is just like taking a vacation NOW where the STRONG DOLLAR gives you more shares for the amount invested. He felt the Euro WOULD EVENTUALLY cycle back higher and now is a great time to buy.

This is from a guy that DOES NOT invest outside the USA so this is significant that Jim sees great value in Europe. He gave the California Investment Trust European Fund as a good way to buy into that area (Disclosure: CIT sponsors Jim but they DO have good, low rates and they even talked about sponsoring me if I were to give them significant traffic someday.)

» Kirk - 10/15/00 Summary

Richard did the show today but Jim called in with a short report:

Jim's "Super-8" portfolio is up 0.8% YTD beating the major averages.

Jim expects next week to be good for the market and for this to be a good year, but not anything like years past.

Jim said the BIG news this week was Abby Cohen and the fact we didn't topple in the face of the Middle East problems. He says "all bets are off" if we go to $50 oil, but he doesn't think this will happen (not in anyone's interest).

THey are a bit confusing to me in their explaination of using stops. They often tell callers to use stops when their companies are going up and yet Jim rode Intel on a 100% up then down 50% round trip. Personally, I hate stops and think they are only for traders but you do need to keep an eye on your stocks. For example, I sold T not when it hit a stop, but when my outlook for the company soured. I then waited for a period of relative strength (up to $37 from $34) to unload it. I find this is FAR BETTER than using stops, but it does require much more time. Of course, sometimes you don't get a good, strong bounce to sell into... and you are stuck.

» Kirk - Stop Loss Orders

Jim and Rich Jorgensen are BIG FANS of Stop Loss orders.

Myself, I HATE them. Here is a good article on why they are not so hot...

Excerpt:

If the market is weak and volume is thin, the specialist can drive the stock's price down to a level at which a bunch of stop orders are activated, market veterans say. After all, the more trades, the more revenue for securities dealers.

"If there's a lot of stop-loss orders at the same price, there's a tendency for the market to find that price," said Ed Wedbush, president of Wedbush Morgan Securities

I think "Stop Losses" should only be for traders. IF you really like a stock and it goes down, then you should be buying more or reexamine your ability to pick stocks or the reasons you picked the stock and see if it still applies.

» Kirk - Short Interest

Esian (guest cohost and a trader) mentioned today that Friday's rally in the NASDAQ could be some short covering as there was a record set for short interest last week and many traders didn't want to be short over the weekend with the News on the Election certification due today.

» Kirk - Jorgensen's Picks this weekend

Jim is giving out a $100 bill replica if you call and get your question on while he is doing his show today.

Get information on the show, including the phone number to call here:

Jim said he likes 2 of the stocks now in his "Super 8" portfolio Plus antoher:

He likes Intel, MSFT and Cisco that he says are all in his buy zone.

Another caller asked him about QQQ at present levels. His reply was a riot:

"They are like a bridge jumper on a bungie cord"!

Meaning he expects them to snap back, but doesn't say where the jumper will eventually end up!
