Have been talking to a number who are "in the know" down in the Valley about the piece and the word "Ponzi" came up a little too often for comfort. You're not likely to find anyone as bullish as I when it comes the "Big Picture" benefits of the Net (and the rewards have been nice), but the recent rotation into big-cap tech and old-economy value has the ring of something more than flash-in-the-pan status. Should be interesting to track the relative performance of the mid/smalls going forward (they have been the place to be for the past 15 months). Could just be a temporary deal, quarter-end window dressing and all. The article talks about sector rotation within the nasdaq, and states that different tech sectors have taken turns leading the nasdaq to new highs. I added these comments: The question now: Are there any runners left on the team to complete a lap to 6000 -- and if so, where will they come from? I'd say the runners are going to come from smaller and smaller cap companies. (see the charts posted) The changing of the guard from large to small to micro. Investors are looking for value in the smaller cap stocks. IMO this trend is what is driving increased interest in BB stocks. But the trend will eventually reverse - the large caps will again rule the naz, and the small caps will again be out of favor. This rotation could go on forever - pushing the Nasdaq ever higher. -- posted by Don_W » matttheduck - burn rate i for one do take seriously the question of when internet companies become profitable, and how profitable they become. barron's is a doom and gloom publication, because no one would buy it otherwise (see rande's comments about the media on the "politics" thread). regardless of the source, internet companies should feel pressure to become profitable as soon as possible. i only own one (aol) which is, and has been profitable. note, however, how that stock got slammed when it announced the merger with time warner, and the future potential revenue/profit growth rate began to be refigured based on the alliance with a slower-growing, "old media" company. this is why i believe companies such as amzn are dangerous investments. they are not profitable, and really seem to have no hope of being profitable anytime in the near future. however, as long as somebody is willing to keep recapitalizing these companies, they can keep going. the question is how long can they keep finding a "greater fool" to do it?-- posted by matttheduck » Outrider - Cash burn Rande:Barron's is generally too gloomy for my naturally sunny outlook, but we are having a rare rain today... But, I have to wonder in this case whether Barron's is anticipating a trend or reporting past news. By coincidence (you know I make NO claims to be a market timer or great stock picker), I had taken some profits from so-called "high-flying" tech stocks and moved them into mutal funds and a couple of blue chip picks right before the recent rotation started. For me, it was just one of those feelings in the pit of your stomach that things had gotten out of balance. See? We do listen when you say "allocation, allocation". I am hearing more and more of the same sentiments. I can not help but think that a re-focus on potential profitability will make for stronger companies in the long run (although probably not without some pain for some).
