» Kirk - Foolish Stuff

I first heard of the Motley Fools when someone that I was helping with investing told me that they followed them at AOL for learning about stock investing. I later heard them substitute for Bob Brinker's Moneytalk on ABC a few years ago. I enjoyed their fun approach to investing and it is entertaining and educational to follow them along as they learn about stocks and then tell others what they have learned.

I may not agree with some important parts of what they say, but that is what makes the World interesting. To me, they seem all too willing to pay big time for big names, ignoring valuation and assuming that paying too high is ok long term as good companies will reward you later. So far, the strategy is working for them as their portfolios do quite well.

I sometimes listen to their shows and am impressed that they address the concept of valuation, but have different opinions for the future outlook for some internet companies than I have. They seem to give a very balanced discussion of investing in internet companies and often have guests to discuss both pros and cons.

The Fools site is where I first read of the PEG ratio (see my recent article on PEG Ratio, Another Market Valuation Tool for more info.

Anyway, I though we could add a Saturday chat session for the times they are on the air. We can then use this thread to discuss what was said.

If someone can post a schedule with a link to where we can listen to them, then I can add the Saturday chat session to our Welcome page.

» JenL_3 - Chat during the Motley Fools Radio Show

Good idea Kirk! The Motley Fools Radio Show is on the radio at different times in different markets. Here is the ….

Motley Fools Radio Schedule

The most current show can be listened to on the internet at this link:

Motley Fools Radio Show Online (Click on "Current Show")

The only problem is - I'm not sure if you can listen to the MF show live on the internet, or if the show has to be archived first. Presently if you click on "Current Show" it plays last week's show. Since we have The Motley Fools radio show on KNWX 7:70 AM in Seattle from 9-12 AM on Sat., I've never tried listening to the show live on the internet. On the same page you can listen to the last three weeks Fools Radio Show archives.

I guess we will find out on Saturday.

So let's meet in the….

Suite 101 - Finance Chatroom

….on Saturday 9:00 -12:00 AM pdt to chat about and listen to
The Motley Fools Radio Show

» KirkL - KSFO has a live RealAudio Feed

go here then click on the flashing "Listen Live - Click Here" in the black line at the top.

They have the Fools from 10AM until 1PM Saturdays and Art Bell is on right now! 8(

Maybe someone else can find a station that has the show from 9AM until Noon, otherwise, we can change the time to this netcast (I might do it anyway in the future....we can always vote!)

Check out the Welcome page for the new "Chat Name"...

» jbking - Here's a spin on the fools..

Here is a link to an article by Jason Zweig(Money magazine) about the Motley Fools strategy. A rather interesting read imo.

Check it out.

» JenL_3 - Good find JB!

Your link to the Money.com article above has a link to the original article by Jason Zweig: False Profits which questions the Motley Fool's Foolish Four investment portfolio.

Ann Coleman's rebuttal article from fool.com: Money Mag Rags on the Foolish Four

and the follow-up Jason Zweig Money.com article: Fools and their money

This Money Magazine article was also mentioned in the first hour of today's Motley Fools Radio show. And they also made some digs at some Money Magazine cover pages through the years like having in big bold letters in June '94:

Buy Stocks Now!

and in Aug '97:

Sell Stocks Now!

without having any basis for that bad advice.

» JenL_3 - Foolish Company Research Reports

This from 7/26 WSJ:

Motley Fool Plans to Issue Research Reports for a Fee

The Motley Fool.....said Monday it will start issuing its own research reports on companies later this year.

The site will charge users a fee to access reports on such widely held stocks as America Online and Amazon.com. ......details of the pricing structure are still being developed, but .....users will be able to buy individual reports or subscribe to a year of coverage on a particular company.

The "Fool," as it's known online, says it believes its reports will be popular with a growing number of investors who have come to distrust research from traditional Wall Street firms. "With our reports there will be a total lack of conflict of interest," says Chris Hill, a spokesman for the site. "We aren't managing anyone's money, and we're not financing these companies. We're just providing our own research."

The site plans to start offering the reports in October.

» KirkL - Bad Advice?

Bad Advice?

A recent show that i had on tape...

Q: A women called asking how her 15 yr old son should invest the $1500 summer job money he earned.

A: They suggested splitting it between two stocks... AOL and KO.

I think this advice was horrible. I might have suggested half in SPY and then if you want him to follow individual stocks, I'd go with MSFT, IBM, HWP, CISCO or INTEL over AOL and perhaps DIS over KO. Better valuations from my list of highly valued stocks that should enjoy huge earnings from who ever wins with the internet. Also, DIS is more interesting than KO...

I can understand not wanting a kid to invest ALL his money into a boring fund, but I think the comparison of the two stock picks to SPY would be very educational...

What do you think? How would you invest his summer job money and why?

The Fools - Jokers or Competition?

To: +marc ultra (7521 ) From: +don lane http://www.techstocks.com/~wsapi/investo... Friday, Aug 6 1999 1:38AM ET

Do the fools still have a love affair going with that EBAY stock they put away awhile back around $110 split adjusted, then rode up to 234, then down to 70 before today's bounce.
That's investing? I don't think so.
Reminds one of their Iomega fiasco from 55 to under 10.
Are they still Iomega fans?
And whatever happened to that Rainforest Cafe or whatever they recommended on the radio before it fell off a cliff.
They invest like a couple of college guys wet behind the ears.
Golly gee, that is exactly what they are! How about that.

Interesting. Lets look at the results as they often speak for themselves.

http://www.fool.com/portfolios.htm

Hmmm..... Results seem pretty good to me.

Did I miss something?

Does anyone know if the Fools recommend how to spread an investors money between their portfolios? I would suggest that taking a swing at the Rule-breaker results (still up 4%) that has the most volitility and it up the least, isn't looking at the whole picture. I would also guess that this is the riskiest of their portfolios and would have the percentage of assets invested.
