In response to message posted by investorquest:

I'm watching.

Most are down, correct?

Not much to cheer about for most and few will post to bring attention to a poor pick, correct?

When (if?) the market turns, then you will see more interest. Until then, please continue the updates.

my pick go down, down and not too far from bottom. I check this thread each time it is brought up. Thanks for your work - now, can you do something to make them all go up for a change!

I'm watching, and waiting until this one's over with so that I can make a different and better pick for the next one.

Not much to say. Juno Online Services (JWEB) sucks. That's about it.

But we do appreciate you running the contest.

Yes sir, I've been watching my lucky Universal Express pick. I've never paid any attention to penny stocks before. Wouldn't it be nice if these profits were for real in my bank account!

Thanks for all your work to make this contest a success.

In response to message posted by JenL_2:

Hey, Jen, I'm just a curious bystander with very little money in the market. I've had some lucky picks. Lest that sound too simplistic, here's how I arrived at my three picks.

ERJ, Embraer Airlines, is a well-known company in Brazil, where I live. It is common knowledge that it is given very privileged status by the Brazilian government, almost as if it were a state-owned company. So Brazilian diplomats defend Embraer's interests worldwide. It hasn't been doing too hot lately, largely because of the dollar/real exchange rate.

MGA, Magna Automotive, came to my attention when I visited a friend in a tiny little town in south-central Iowa. He was a farmer for 20 years, then spent another 20 years as an employee at Magna in rural Iowa. A company smart enough to locate in that state -- taking advantage of Iowans' no-nonsense work ethic -- seemed worth a second look. MGA's momentum was obvious by looking at several charts, confirming my choice.

Universal Express is a different story. I had never heard of the company. But the penny contest was nearing the deadline for entering, and I found a chart showing the most active penny stocks. I don't remember the website, but my initial explanation of my pick does include that site. Then, a news item at YahooFinance made mention of an agreement between USXP.OB and E-Trade. For some reason, that seemed important to me. I felt it might be a good way to benefit from any stock market advance. At that point, I wanted to avoid a pure technology play.

I'm tempted to hint about some secret formula, just to create some suspense. Sorry, there is none. I read some technical stuff, but let others do the work, and don't become enamored with any one guru. I'm not much impressed by analysts who are ALWAYS bearish or ALWAYS bullish. If they are just promoting their own agenda -- not interested.

I rely mostly on common sense. To get a feel for the general market direction, I check http://www.baresearch.com/sneakpeek.htm often, as well as the threads here on Suite101 under Kirk's baton.

By the way, if you believe in charts this may be a good time to sell USXP.OB. Then buy when it swoops way down to 2.5 cents again. That pattern is intriguing; but then again, it may just be chicken scratches. See http://finance.yahoo.com/q?s=USXP.OB&d=t

Thanks for your kind words of encouragement. Sorry I can't give you the complicated formula. That's about all I can say.

Thank you! It is nice to know I am not talking to myself.
I enjoy doing the contest, and even though many picks are down I do think there will be quite a bit of action in the next while. The contest is not over yet!
DennisL, you will not have to wait until this contest is over to make another pick. I still do plan on starting another contest starting January 2002. This one will have six months behind it, two winners, and the markets will be past year end tax losses. This way everyone should be able to start with bargains for the new year.

In response to message posted by Whirlwind:

Thanks for the tip. But I tend to be suspicious of commentary which reads like an advertisement. That last paragraph oozes full endorsement, and lacks the impartiality I look for:

Solaia Ventures Inc. is a knowledge based oil and gas exploration company focused on the discovery and development of rich oil and gas projects throughout North America. For more information on the company or to receive the Company's Daily Drill Report on all current drilling activities via email, visit www.solaiaventures.com or contact Todd Hanas, investor relations, at 1-888-702-4478. TEL: 1-888-702-4478 Todd Hanas, investor relations Internet: www.solaiaventures.com.

I respect your high opinion of the Stockhouse commentary, and you may have found it's accurate. My fifth sense tells me we're looking at mutual back scratching.

That was the stock I picked for the contest. I don't own it myself, but thought I should update what's happening with it anyway.
