For awhile, I was unable to get into chat with Internet explorer.

Even when I could, it would suck up most of my USER resources and I couldn't do anything else. This was a problem for MANY years, since the latest version of chat was added.

Recently, chat worked great if I used the new Netscape 7.01 but I could not run chat with the latest update of IE from Microsoft.

I started to find other sites on the web had java applications that used to work but no longer worked with IE but worked great with Netscape.

Well, I found out the issue!!! When MSFT got a ruling from the courts about supporting Java, it seems they took it out of their latest version of IE or replaced it with their virtual java machine or something like that!!! Anyway, it seems this is why many older web sites didn't work with IE! They probably had some Java commands that are not recognized by MSFT's virtual machine (their Java replacement) Amazing!

So this is what I did to fix the problem:

I downloaded the latest Java from Sun and told the install procedure to make it the default for BOTH IE and Netscape. Now Chat runs GREAT on both IE and Netscape!!!

Kirk I have just the opposite problem. I prefer Netscape and have not been able to get into chat since I installed Netscape 7.01. So I have had to use IE in chat. I did download the latest Java and install it as you said. It made no differrence. Hmmm?

Strange. I found the help on a site www.dslreports.com where they had suggestions on how to get their java programs to work.

They have a forum and some other ideas were:

uninstall Java and then reinstall it.

You might also uninstall java, msft's virtual machine AND Netscape 7.01. Then reinstall them. I'd install Netscape FIRST, then install the latest Java on top of it.

They say sometimes the Java gets corrupt... I really don't like Java as it takes control of your machine and any bugs in the software can mess up your PC thus web sites you visit can hurt you! I used to keep most of the Java turned off, but now many of the financial web sites I use require it so I am stuck using it.

A last resort is to save all your files on a CD-R/W then reformat your HD and reload all your software. We had to do that for a laptop for one of the the girls I mentor. She lost the ability to run IE and Word so she couldn't do homework!!!

Kirk for some reason uninstalling Java and reinstalling it did the trick! THANKS!!! Now the sound even works in chat on Netscape. I would have to use IE any more!

BTW it is rumored Bill Gates said last week. If I had a penny for each time windows crashed... oh wait a minute I do. smile
