» JenL_2 - Posting a link or picture in discussion and chat

Hi jhh - glad you asked. Here goes:

Posting a link in a discussion message

- Hi-lite the url you want to copy.

- Right-click and choose "Copy".

- Left-click where you want to put the url in a message.

- Right-click and choose "Paste".

- Hit "preview message" or "post message" and the url automatically turns into a clickable link.

Posting a link in chat

- Hi-lite the url you want to copy.

- Right-click and choose "Copy".

- Left-click where you want to put the url in the chat message box.

- Hit Ctrl V.

- Hit "Enter" and the url automatically turns into a clickable link on the chat screen.

Making a "hidden url" clickable link

- If you have a long url - you need to use HTML to make a "hidden url" clickable link in a discussion message. The HTML instructions are in...

Tim's Cheat Sheet

...which is also posted on the "Links" page, and in Tim Younkin's signature.

Posting a Picture or Animation

- There are two ways to post a picture or animation in a discussion message. You can post a link to the image or you can use HTML to post the actual image. But first you have to save the image and upload it to your webspace.

Saving an image

- Right click on any image on the internet that you want to save.

- Choose "Save Picture As".

- That brings up the "Save Picture" box.

- Use the pull-down menu to choose where you want to save the image (I use a zip disk).

- You can change the name of the image before you save it.

- The type of the image (usually gif or jpeg) automatically shows.

- Click on "Save".

Uploading your image to your webspace

- If you don't already have a webspace you can register for free webspace at...

http://www.geocities.com

(among others - but the free Suite 101 homepage does not have a file manager).

- Follow the instructions at the site to use the file-manager EZ upload tool to upload your image.

- Find the name of your image in your "file directory".

- Click on "View" to view your image and copy the url (which is the new address of the image at your website).

- You can paste the url temporarily in MSWord or an email until you're ready to paste it into a discussion message or into the chat room.

Posting a link to an image

- Right-Click and copy the url of the image.

- In a discussion message Right-Click and paste the url.

- In chat hit Ctrl V to paste the image into the chat message box and then hit "Enter".

Posting the actual picture or animation

- If you want to post the actual picture or animation in a discussion message you need to use HTML, and again the instructions are in...

Tim's Cheat Sheet

Hope this helps. Feel free to email me with any questions, or ask at...

» jhh - Thanks, Jen

Jen,

Thank you for your quick and thorough answers to my questions!

By the way, I copied your info on my screen-grabber - but is there a way to copy, say, a single posting all at once? Thanks again. Jim

» JenL_2 - How to Print or Copy a Post

Sure Jim - We went over this once before quite awhile ago, and we determined that different methods worked with different browsers. So here is the way to do it with Win95, IE 5.0:

To Print a Post

- Hi-lite what you want to print

- Click on "File"

- Select "Print"

- Under "Print Range" click on "Selection"

To Copy a Post

- Hi-lite what you want to copy

- Right-click and choose "Copy"

- Left click where you want to put the post (In MSWord, another discussion message, an email, etc.)

- Right-click and choose "Paste"

That's all there is to it, although there might be different directions for Netscape browser.....Jen
