» KirkL - How to Ignore a User

To ignore a user.

Give them a single warning.
Don't engage in name calling as that just encourages warped minds.
If that fails.
click on their name, for example xxxxyyyxxxyyy
this puts /msg "xxxxyyyxxxyyy" into the posting window
now copy this to your "clipboard" using Ctrl+c
Now paste this to the window with Ctrl+v
Now edit it so it looks like this
/ignore xxxxyyyxxxyyy
note that I removed the " on both sides of xxxxyyyxxxyyy
now hit return and the offensive person is ignored

If another person starts to argue with the offensive person, give them a warning, then ignore them also. Maybe give them a link to the url for this msg.

Have your ordered Kirk's Book of the Week?

Against the Gods : The Remarkable Story of Risk
by Peter Bernstein: Click picture to orderOrdering any books through Kirk's site helps support this site
With the stock market breaking records almost daily, a study of the concept of risk seems quite timely. Peter Bernstein has written a comprehensive history of man's efforts to understand risk and probability.

» Karin - Spammer

I do not think this method worked for me.
It always returned to the /msg line when I hit the "enter" button.
That guy was so fast he must have captured all our names at once and we where imobilized

» DennisL - Please help me with chat

Hi, everyone. I'm glad this thread is at the top of the list of Suite101 investing discussions at the moment. I need help with chat.

I bought a new Windows 98 computer to replace my old Windows 3.1 computer. My new machine, of course, has a Java-enabled browser (IE version 4.0), sound, and all kinds of goodies that my old machine does not have. Supposedly, I can now do chat, so I tried to during BB's program today. It came up, displayed the window, and let me enter commands, but I don't what commands to enter, how to identify which chat is the BB discussion, etc.

Would somebody please post here or direct me to a simple primer on getting onto the BB chat so that I may try tomorrow or whenever I want to?

TIA.

» PualH - Come visit us tomorrow! :O)

Dennis,

Most of us at S101 use the S101 Chat Room when we want to chat. Here's the url to get there:

http://www.suite101.com/chat.cfm/270

You can also click on the "Welcome" link at the top of this page and then scroll down until you see the link that takes you to the Chat Room. Kirk keeps the "Welcome Page" up to date,... So it's probably a good idea to check that page out once in a while. Whenever I want to enter the chat room, I always do it though the welcome page.

Once you click on the link, you'll be taken to the room. It takes it a few seconds (Maybe 30, if it's slow... I don't know) to load. You'll see a listing of all the commands that're avalable in the room, below the actual chat window. You type your text into the text line at the bottom of the chat window, and then hit the *enter* key. That's how it works,... everything just scrolls up,... every time somebody says something, it just pushes everything above it up. Chat is actually pretty fun! :O)

There's also a Bob Brinker Chat Room, but I don't use that very much since I like/know the people at S101 better, and I also find the S101 software easier to use.

BTW, there's nothing that says you can't go and try chatting right now. When you get there, you'll probably be the only one there, but the room is always open. (You'll just wind up talking to yourself,... but you should be able to get a feel for how it works.)

Good luck! Hope we see you there tomorrow! :O)

Paul

» JenL_3 - Suite 101 Chat

Paul - Thanks for the instructions on how to use Suite 101 chat. That will be helpful to new members.

Also in the Suite 101 chat room, you can share a link to another website: 1) Copy the url into your browser. 2) Click on the message box and hit Ctrl V to put the url into the message box, and then hit enter to put the url onto the chat room screen as a clickable link. 3) By clicking on the link you can open another screen to that linked site, but still keep the chatroom screen open.

Kirk - Thanks for the clarification on the "ignore" directions I didn't know a space was needed between: /ignore xxxxyyyxxxyyy
That's why it didn't work for me. Now we know - Now we're ready....Make My Day!!!.....Jen

» DennisL - Chat Room Link

I looked for the chat room link, too, shortly after 4:00 Pacific time and the link was gone. If I remember correctly, the last time I visited the "Welcome" page during "off hours" ("on hours" being Saturday and Sunday, 1 - 4 Pacific), the link was there and you could enter the chat room and talk to yourself if you wanted to.

Captain, did something on the "Welcome" page get nuked?

» JenL_3 - Chatroom

Thruhiker & Good Guy - I don't know why you couldn't find the chatroom. Maybe you needed to hit "refresh"?? That happens to me sometimes, when Kirk makes a change to a page, but I can't see the change, because am really looking at the page the way it was, not the way it is. Sorry about that. Here is the link to the room itself:

http://www.suite101.com/chat.cfm/270

Try that link to go to the room, and you will see at the top of the page Welcome, Articles, Links, Discussion. Just click on "Discussion" to come back here.....Jen

» DennisL - Hey Jen, Chat Room Link

I just tried clicking on the Refresh button on the "Welcome" page, and the link to the chat room didn't appear. I did bookmark the actual URL that you posted, so that I'll be able to get to the chat room in the future if the link on the "Welcome" page is not there. Thanks.
