In response to I went to 98% cash today. posted by pete2214:hello pete2214 , appreciate your comments and i'm sure Kirk does too . and although i agree with your statement about pigs get slaughtered , i don't necessarily agree with your reallocation this week . i'm very fortunate that the level of my critical mass is such that i can miss a rally or two and make enough on my critical mass to live very well on the lower performance of fixed income . most folks however need some type of a stock asset allocation to get enough performance to provide them with enough money to live on . and although i am normally a bearish person who tends to look at the worst case scenerio , i agree with bob brinker & Kirk's viewpoint that the market will probably go higher moving forward . but because of my critical mass i can well afford to await a better buying oppportunity . as for asset allocation advice i cannnot help you as that is totally up to you , but the generic advice is to start with 50 / 50 . as for your question on weither you choose to use " equities in your house as part of your assets " , i choose to do so . but i own all of my real estate free and clear and use a conservative tax assessment valuation . but you must keep in mind that the true value of real estate is what a willng buyer will actually give you for your house . apprasials , assessments , and what the guy next door got for his house on a sale last year may not be accurate going forward . once again thanks for the comments -- posted by allancoleman » mrs1123 - I went to 98% cash today. I kept seeing the earnings coming out and I thought they looked very good. Yet at the same time the market was falling like a stone. I just didn't understand why everybody was seeing the earnings so differently. A couple of my mutual funds weren't doing as good as others percentage wise so I felt in my case it was better to take profits and pay the taxes. They do say go away in May, not February. This is one of those “it depends” answers. Home equity is an asset that you should track on your personal balance sheet. I don’t count it as part of my investment portfolio just as I don’t count my “cash reserves for living expenses” as part of my investment portfolio for calculating my asset allocation. If you have a large amount of home equity, say $1M, and you could move to a lower priced home and harvest this excess equity after taxes are paid, then you could consider your “excess equity” as a fixed income asset just as you might consider your promised Social Security payments as an annuitized phantom fixed asset. With spreadsheets, you can calculate asset allocation every which way just to see where you stand but make sure you stick to one for making allocation decisions for when to rebalance your portfolio. Also, I look at my high home equity as my “long term care insurance.” If I’m ever sick or disabled, perhaps from breaking my neck windsurfing, I can simply sell my house and use the money to pay for my care. Someone married might not want to kick their family out in the streets to do this so for them it is different. In response to I went to 98% cash today. posted by pete2214:. It would seem to me that one would definitely consider one's home part of net worth, but certainly not a part of "investment" assets. That's a fine line, but to me, this line is divided by the fact that the home (until it's sold) has to be protected by other assets, rather than the other way around. If you understand what I'm trying to say, I will worry about you.
