iamacamera wrote "I sincerely sympathise with you - I, too lost a lot of $". I think we both have a lot of company in that QQQ trade loss.
However, I have no regrets about retiring when I did in 2000. I downsized my lifestyle and we've worked to make back some of the money we lost by listening to Brinker. I still get a bit steamed at Brinker when I have to pass up a great trip I want to take but I have to admit I did learn a valuable lesson from the whole debacle.

In response to Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: What Secular Bear Market? posted by fasteddy707:

"If they, however, took the total cash reserves as the figure to multiply the 20 to 30 percent the total cash reserve would equal 82.5%, because you moved 65%x 50%=32.5%+ the original 50%cash/fixed income. Then 20%x 82.5%=16.5% and 82.5%x30%=24.75%. So a 50% loss on 16.5% would be a loss at the bottom of 8%+ and 12%+. "

Those voodoo numbers look very fishy to me!

» gabbai - allan coleman - sy harding as a barometer

Allan: I think you mentioned a while back that you used Sy Harding as one of your "barometers". I went to his website and I was just wondering what you are looking at over there. Are you a Sy Harding subscriber/member?

In response to allan coleman - sy harding as a barometer posted by gabbai:

hello gabbai ,

i was introduced to Sy Harding and his excellent book by Norm3x . not only was the book excellent , but i have also found that normxxx's advice in the past has been excellent too . i bought several of my friends a copy of Sy's book . bought most of them through suite101 .

i don't subscribe to Sy's newsletter although i think that normxxx does . i have found that Sy's weekly freebie post on his web site to be enough informaton for my limited market timing / trading purposes . Sy probably has the best explanation on MACD's i've ever read in any technical analysis book . and i have made lots of money by just being in the market the last couple of years by buying in october / november and getting out at market highs later .

and right now normxxx and Sy ( ? ? ) are predicting a downturn in february / march and a flat market until this next fall . and as bob brinker says , " we'll all know in the fullness of time " . smile .

In response to Sy's advice posted by cpa61:

I know I will get blasted for the following comments from readers, but here is my advice about Sy. Stay away. I started following him right after Bobbiies buy signal several years ago. I did nothing but lose money. Lose. Lose. After finally learning from Hulbert that Sy had lost money over the last 10 years I bailed.

He writes v interesting commentary, but he is a chartist and I learned charting is a failure.

Do your due diligence before sending Sy your money. btw he sent me free access last year for three months as I recall, and he lost money. Amazing.
AS I have stated here before, Bobbie is not perfect, but there are many others out there that are far worse.

Technical Question for Kirk:
Why can I log in OK on this computer but not on a newer one on my network?
ps I don't think the network has anything to do with it, so make it just a different computer?

In response to Re: Re: Re: CBS MARKETWATCH SAYS BET ONLY WHAT YOU CAN AFFORD TO posted by retiredinprescot:

Retiredin P, my approach was entirely different from yours. I decided that Brinker gave lousy trading advice and vowed never to follow such advice again.
However I didn't think that invalidated his long term timing advice so I followed his March 2003 buy signal, albeit 1 day late.
I have gained back 3X+ what I lost in the Qs debacle so I'm a happy camper. I realise that this isn't over till the fat lady sings, but so far so good. I have trimmed back to 50% equities a couple of times to reduce my risk.
I still have the remnants of my Qs. I look at them occasionally to remind me to never again be such an idiot.

In passing I note the tone on this thread has become somewhat more civil. It'll probably change after this post.

agreed iamacamera , that this forum is much more civil . smile . and also agree that bob brinker's advice , taken prudently with caution , can be profitable . but , of course , much of the advice given here on just about any investing forum on suite101 can be as educational and enriching .
