» foscarr - protect yourself I have been interested in participating in online auctions for sometime now. I have just recently started bidding and purchasing my winnings. As with a lot of you out there, I was paranoid of getting ripped off. I have heard so many horror stories. So, instead of running away from a potentially fun and interesting way to purchase items, I began doing some research into reducing my risk of buying through auctions. What I found was a good online company that will mediate between the buyer and seller. The company is Iescrow and they will reduce your risk to basically nil. I have made several purchases through them and everything was seamless and best of all I was at ease when making my purchases. They do charge a small charge of 5% of the item, but it is much better than losing your money or having a faulty product delivered to you. To find out more, go to their website and then comment on what you think. http://www.iescrow.com This company can be used with any purchases online, not just auctions..kudos to them-- posted by foscarr » AsWas - good idea eBay, the largest (and to some the scariest!) online auction not only plugs I-escrow but also TradeSafe. I have not used either yet, but I came close when I was buying "new" software and wanted to make sure I wasn't getting a pirated or mysterious copy thereof. Thanks for writing in - that is a good point, and with enough new info, I should probably do another online auction/purchase follow up soon. Debbie -- posted by AsWas » crewswear - Thanks for the Info I appreciate the information on I-escrow and tradesafe. I like to collect movie memorabilia and usually go to big auctions sites, like Universal Studios, who are reputably and easy to deal with. I've been hesitant about going to other sites, in case it was a rip-off.thanks,and if you like movie stuff, too you should check out their site: http://www.universal-studios.net/auction... -- posted by crewswear » Sandioh - I love ebay! I have been selling various things on Ebay for a couple of years now, only once did I have a check returned & the cutomer warned me prior to it coming back. Maybe I have been fortunate, I think it depends on the types of things you are buying or selling, but I am proud of the feedback I have earned & work hard to continue to earn feedback.-- posted by Sandioh » Lawhawk - I've posted additional comments on Internet Auctions in my late I've posted additional comments on Internet Auctions in my latest article . Caveat Emptor is still the best policy but as more people utilize the auctions - like Ebay or Yahoo!, they may demand that the websites take a more active role in culling the bad apples.-- posted by Lawhawk » tazidude - My auction experience... I have purchased quite a few things at auctions and have bid on many, many items.I have found that the price range that I look for in buying stuff that I want is usually found at www.dealdeal.com. I generally drop out of the bidding in auctions at ebay and egghead and ibid due to auction prices often approach if not exceed retail price of products. In all of my acquisitions from DealDeal, I have only had one problem and that was the distributor had forgotten to include an item that I was expecting. It only took 1 email message to the auction management. After which, I was contacted by the distributor and was informed that not only was I correct in my assessment, but that they had found another item that I was missing that I was not aware of! They are sending me the items express post at their expense. I might add that an incentive for this auction was a 199.00 rebate for the top two bidders. In the end, I paid only $6.00 for the item plus shipping. Now, this is a distributor that I may utilize for future direct purchasing due to their courteous and prompt and professional handling of my situation. Even taking into consideration that they lost money on their transaction to "me!" Need a laugh, or some wit, or some knowledge? -- posted by tazidude
