» Maryjean - Breastfeeding during the night

Hi. I have a beautiful baby girl who is 5 months old tomorrow. The breastfeeding has been wonderful but I am wondering at this point if she is nursing too much at night. My other daughter used a pacifyer but we did not offer one to our infant. As a result, she is using me instead of anything else. It does not bother me since she sleeps right next to me and nurses for a large part of the night. I asked the Dr. and he said that I should let her cry a bit instead of automatically nursing her. I am just looking for some feedback and would appreciate any thoughts or comments. Should I be really encouraging her ot go it alone or should I hold off? Looking forward to hearing from someone! Thank you! Maryjean I should also add that I am returning to work at the end of January and I want the transition to be as easy as possible for us!

Pacifiers are a substitute for the real thing... mommy!! It's great that you are giving your baby the best. smile One of the key things you said was "It does not bother me. . ." There's your answer right there. If mommy is happy and baby is happy, then woohoo! That's great!! :D I encourage you to follow your baby's cues and to follow your heart. There is nothing wrong with continuing to nurse her at night. It's very normal. Many older babies get much of their nursing in at nighttime. In fact, since you are going to be starting back to work, continuing to sleep with her and nurse her during the night will help her with the transition. It will give you and her much-needed mommy/daughter time and lots of touch and cuddles and help assure that she continues to get a good amount of breastmilk.

I am totally with you when it comes to night feedings, I wouldn't hold off on changing anything. My daughter is 6 months old and she still sleeps with me and does 2-3 night feedings every night, I get enough sleep so I'm not worried about it for now. I use the pacifier with her as well. Good luck in the future.
