Hydroponics and algae

» jason5 - the cup project I'm currently working as a grad student at the U. of Akron, OH researching the effects of 7 water levels on 16 native wetland plants. The set up is 560, 24 oz. cups that have holes burned at the specific level where I want the water. Within the cups is a 10 oz. cup full of sand and peat and one of the sixteen species. Holes are drilled at the bottom of this cup to allow for capillary action. The experiment has been running for about a month and is beginning to develop algae in several of the cups. Does anyone know of an algaecied that would not hurt plants? Any information would be much appreciated.Jason Karnezis U. of Akron Akron, Ohio 44325 330.972.8677 330.620.6989 jkanoe72@hotmail.com -- posted by jason5 » swm30721 - Re: the cup project - algae control Perhaps cupric sulfate would be useful to you. My dad used it in our fishpond for 20+ years. Cattails and lilies grew just fine, and we could stop the algae in 'mid-bloom'. I wish also to emphasize there was no detrimental effect to any of the pond life - full 'bio-sphere' of critters and plants thrived - but without management the algae could take over and strangle the life out of the pond. -- http://www.infoplease.lycos.com/ce6/sci/... -- you can probably find it at Home Depot or any farm supply company. If you fear it might interfere with your experiment I can put you in touch with a plant tissue culture professor, she has access to a relatively knew compound that was design for use in delicate experiments as well as production work. Good luck.-- posted by swm30721 » hydroponics - Re: the cup project In response to message posted by jason5:You could also try non-chemical means such as ground cover, i.e. opaque cloth or plastic mulches as well as using a "dry" layer on top of sand or gravel, etc. that would help stop algal infestation. -- posted by hydroponics
