I always start my plants from the top of the pineapple (with flesh) which I immediately put into a tub of water and sit on the window ledge. It takes about two-three weeks to form roots. When it has a healthy set of roots, I plant it with my otherpineapplee plants by digging a hole and adding a slow releasefertilizerr. I haven't lost any yet. When it is about two feet tall I dice up and apple and sprinkle it in and around the plant. I typically see it set fruit within a couple of months. The plot where I plant these gets a healthy dose of sun in the afternoon. Based on all that I have read, it seems as though I do this against conventional wisdom - but it works, and there is nothing better than a pineapple that has been allowed to ripen on the plant! By the way - if you are into grilling - I give fresh slices a good sprinkling of cajun spice, then place them on the grill. I turn them just as they get grill marks. You want them just hot, but still juicy. These are really yummy! -- posted by ilovemybucs » desertblue - Re: Re: pineapple plant In response to Re: pineapple plant posted by ilovemybucs:Wow, makes me wish I lived in Florida! I bet you can grow anything there. -- posted by desertblue » dmthompson - Pineapple Plants and pets My husband gave me a pineapple plant and I would like to keep it indoors under a sun lamp (hoping that this will give it enough light) however, my cat Scylla likes to chew on anything green in the house. Does anyone know if it is pet safe?-- posted by dmthompson » desertblue - Re: Pineapple plants In response to Pineapple plants posted by mutz:Mutz, that seems to be quite common - a bromiliad like Pineapple will get brown leaves when not getting enough water. I would not do the plant food unless you have one specifically for bromiliads, and follow the directions. You could just shock the plant that is struggling to get a toe hold. -- posted by desertblue » desertblue - Re: Pineapple Plants and pets In response to Pineapple Plants and pets posted by dmthompson:I have not heard that any bromiliads were toxic. They CAN have very sharp, sometimes serraded leaves, thought. It might cut your cat's tongue. They also tend to be top heavy plants that a pet can pull down quite easily. If you can keep this plant from your cat, that would be good. Or at least provide her with her own plants - the pet stores sell those potted cat grasses and that should distract her! -- posted by desertblue » belugster - Re: HELP MEE Hey help mee,Hi, I was wondering how your project turned out. Did you ever successfully grow a pineapple? If you have any suggestions please reply to me as I have just returned from Hawaii with some Maui Gold pineapples and am going to try growing them. I emailed you at your suggested email address as well, in case you don't often check this site. I have come across several good web sites but they give varying suggestions. What worked or didn't work for you? Thanks, Belugster -- posted by belugster » alexis2225 - pineapple plant I have just moved from the Tampa Bay area to the Pensacola area and I brought my pineapple plant with me I started it from the top of a pineapple. It was doing great down south, but now it is turning yellow and brown. I was wondering what I can do to help it. It gets lots of sun and the weather is warm, I planted it in the ground with planting soil and manure.-- posted by alexis2225 « Previous 1 2 3 Next » Please follow the guidelines set forth in the Suite101 Posting Etiquette when adding to the discussion. |
