Dracenas or Corn Plants: Dracaena

I have 2 Dracaena plants in the same pot. One plant is larger than the other. The smaller of the two plants died and each time I replace it with another plant of the same size it dies also. I have made 3 replacements so far; each have died. However, the larger plant is doing just fine. Can someone explain this?
