» desertblue - don't have a fish tank? if you don't have a fishtank, you probably know someone who does. Ask them to tell you when they do their monthly or so water changes and bring along several one gallon milk jugs (or whatever you have). Your friends will be happy to be helping you and putting their fish wastes to good use, and you will both be doing the environment a favor by recycling!-- posted by desertblue » Tina_Coruth - Re: don't have a fish tank? In response to don't have a fish tank? posted by desertblue:Hi Jill, I wish I had known this years ago when my husband had an aquarium and I had a lot of houseplants. Now that I have read this, it makes perfect sense. It just never occurred to me before! -- posted by Tina_Coruth » biogardener - Always If your fish water stinks, you are waiting too long to change it. That is not healthy for the fish. I have used syphoned fish water for houseplants for as long as I remember. No one told me to do it. It just seemed the natural thing to do. It has never been smelly. I change the water about once a week, removing 25% of it. In the winter, I replace it with water which has been standing in gallon bottles for at least three days. In the summer, I use rain water, in fact, I save rain water in gallon bottles for the winter.I syphon the water directly into two litre pop bottles which I place in a pail just in case I overfill one. Then I close the pop bottles and keep them close to the plants. I make sure that I do not use the same size of bottle for the fish water as for the replacement water. I have the healthiest house plants you have ever seen. -- posted by biogardener » desertblue - Re: Always In response to Always posted by biogardener:Traute is correct, fish water should not get to the point where it's stinky. But if it is, it's still just fine for your plants. Much better for the fish to do a weekly 25% change, as Traute suggested. -- posted by desertblue » desertblue - Re: Re: don't have a fish tank? They are easy if you know a few basic things, and then you have both a friendly little pet and a source of houseplant gold! I moderate this forum, which is populated by the nicest betta fanatics from all over the world: http://www.bellaonline.com/forum/ultimat... If anyone has a betta or wants one, they are welcome to pop in. -- posted by desertblue » Tina_Coruth - Re: Re: Re: don't have a fish tank? Thank you for the suggestion. -- posted by Tina_Coruth » desertblue - Re: Re: Re: Re: don't have a fish tank? In response to Re: Re: Re: don't have a fish tank? posted by Tina_Coruth:Sure, Tina. If you keep your home at under 70 degrees F, you might want a Paradise Fish instead. They are just like bettas, but for cooler temps. Easy, easy fish! No filters, no big tanks, nothing to plug in. -- posted by desertblue
