» Terrie_Bittner - My favorite shopping tip is to take along a tightwad.

My favorite shopping tip is to take along a tightwad. In this case, it's my 13 year old son. He knows the prices of everything, and if it isn't a good deal, he won't let me buy it. (He does all the cooking so he gets this privilege.) He also makes menues and shopping lists. I've been saving a fortune since he took over. My idea of shopping was to wander around and grab whatever caught my attention!

That is an excellent idea. Grocery shopping can be very tempting.

» Bonnie_R - Do coupons save money?

The statement that coupons save money caught my attention. It is misleading, at best. If you are going to buy that particular brand at that time, a coupon will save you money, but otherwise it can be a little tricky.

If the cost of the coupon brand is higher than other brands you might buy by more than the coupon value it can actually cost you extra.

If it is for something you don't really want and it will rot in the fridge, it isn't much of a savings.
As a home organization advisor, I tell my readers to avoid most coupons until they have pretty much organized their shopping trips. It takes a lot of math to figure out whether a coupon is worthwhile or not--and most are not worth the time and effort it takes.

I suggest starting with a "price book"--you know, that little notebook where you keep your grocery lists and the price you usually pay for each item (including the size and brand if applicable). Once you have all of the prices for your usual groceries on a list, you can more easily judge whether a coupon is worthwhile.

I work with organizationally challenged adults, so maybe my ideas only apply to them. Just a thought. This is what I tell them http://getolife.hypermart.net/Picture/sh...

» Aylasmommy - Great tips....coupons do save our family hundreds each month

I was amazed at how many great coupons there are in the papers, and once I found a store that doubles them (up to a dollar) I was hooked! Couponing is my lifesaver, especially with only living on one income in a high- cost -of -living area.

I dont' know why but our store brand products are never cheaper than the regular products after using a coupon on a product that is on sale..Yes it takes some time and effort but it's well worth it.
