Lunging

» Harimad_Sol - Re: Young Horses Patience!!!Really, patience is the key in that situation. Keep starting him over until he lunges correctly. Eventually he'll get the idea that you won't stop until he's done what you wanted him to do. If you have any more questions, feel free to post more, or email me! Thanks for reading! -- posted by Harimad_Sol » ncswimmingrox - Re: Young Horses In response to Young Horses posted by JudithVan:Well how i usually do it is by using a lunge wip and when he stops crack it, dont whip him just make a noise behind him or make him change direction and he will eventually get the idea -- posted by ncswimmingrox » AKJordan - Re: Young Horses In response to Young Horses posted by JudithVan:If you are teaching the horse horse to lunge from ground up, you have a lot more things to think about. You should start in small circlefirstst, staying close behind him and kind of walking at/with him so he knows to keep moving. Eventually he will understand that you want him to keep moving in a circle and you can move up from walking to trotting. Just stay a touch behind him all of the time and don't be afraidad to move around (you don't have to stand in one spot- you can and should move around to use your body language when teaching a horse to lunge properly). Alwyas face him/her also. If you face a horse and look in their eye they will not want to come to you, but to turn the other way. If you stop and look away from the horse, they will stop also and come to you. So if your horse looks like he/she is about to look into the center and stop/change directions, take a quick, exaggerated step towards him/her, glare at them a little bit, and maybe chirp if they need it. It'll understand that and will probably keep moving. -- posted by AKJordan » TAColvin - Lunging young horse I just bought a horse who will be 3 this summer. I have been working on lunging and I can't seem to get him to do this. To the right he is incredible,(weird I know) but to the left, we do 3/4 of a cirlce, and then he faces his butt towards me, and starts walking or trotting off away from me. This is VERY frusterating. any idea, or help is greatly appreciated.-- posted by TAColvin » Harimad_Sol - Lunging young horse If he does great lunging one way, don't worry--he'll be able to learn to go the other way too. It's actually not as rare as you would imagine. A lot of horses have favorite directions or sides, just like we do (for instance, being right- or left-handed).Do you use a lunge whip? These are really helpful for making sure he keeps going in the right direction. Crack it behind him anytime he slows down or moves out of his circle. Make sure he knows that is not what you want him to do. Once he does it correctly, be sure to reward him right away! -- posted by Harimad_Sol
