» Car - Jet Li hesistates...

Hey, Jet Li hesistates when he hits a girl. ;). I actually read somewhere from a couple of other Martial Arts stars that this philosophy carries into RL and he's a RL nice guy too. =)

What I liked about this movie is that it actually wasn't obvious who the villian was until about midway through... maybe even closer to the end. That's a slightly different, and probably a Hollywood influence ala-Sixth-Sense, from normal Martial Arts movies.

» JonathanLB - Yes, excellent point

Not to spoil the plot for anyone who hasn't seen it, but I like all of the conflicts that occur between members of the same supposed "family groups." It makes it more interesting, and I have to admit I didn't suspect any of that the first time I watched it, maybe I'm just naive! LOL.

I know several Jet Li fans who were less than impressed with the movie, although I really liked it. I still like most of his other work better, but I'd give Romeo Must Die about 3.35 stars or so, if I could give it any rating (not just in half-star increments).

That's interesting about not hitting a girl, I wasn't sure if that was real or just a plot device. One reason it's so fun to watch most Hong Kong movies (specifically ones not made in America) is because you see things that you really would not see in American movies. I like that. I am more of a people's critic I suppose than a traditional critic in that I really don't care for "artistic, "independent" movies most of the time. I don't like most foreign films from Europe, they don't know how to make good movies in my opinion, except maybe some stuff from the UK. French critics even hate their own country's movies, and it's not a wonder, the budgets are low and the movies usually focus on silly romance plots or something. Now Hong Kong, heck yes, they know how to make movies with low budgets. I never thought I'd really be into any foreign movies, but when I saw Hong Kong action, I was thinking "wow, we do NOT even know what action is in America, this rocks!"

American action is full of too many effects and explosions, not enough SKILL. Most of the time people don't even do their own stunts, which is just pretty lame (Tom Cruise did in M:I-2! That was cool). I still love standard action movies, Con Air, The Rock, True Lies, all of those. But, it isn't the same, it's not as impressive, doesn't take skill as much as it takes lots of money.

Thanks for stopping by again! I am thinking about what to review for next week, there are so many choices. I just ordered another DVD, but I am about to make a larger order of DVD's in the near future, so I will have PLENTY of movies to review for a long time!

» Car - hitting women

Well he does "hit" women for the movies but he's not comfortable with it. (eg, He hit the lead in Black Mask... but she was suppose to be one of those super humans.) It was in an interview awhile ago in Inside Kung Fu a neat mag if you're into martial arts... not so much so just for movie stars though.

Speaking of movie stars, I got to meet and have a seminar with Cynthia Rothrock this weekend. Okay... she's not a HUGE HK star... but she's pretty neat and REALLY nice.

» JonathanLB - That's awesome!

Sounds cool to me. I see what you are talking about, yeah he does hit that lady in Black Mask (she was a you-know-what for most of the movie anyway).

I notice that you use Themestream.com, that's a really good service I think, I just found it last week. I put my article on John Woo up:

Check it out if you get a chance.
