» sanjuan - Finding Contemporary Illustrations For Ancient Principles

One of my greatest difficulties as a preacher is in finding contemporary stories, poems, etc. that perfectly illustrate the great principles contained in the scriptures. I confess to not owning an "Applications Bible," but I found those I reviewed lacking in depth of insight and also suffering no small degree of staleness themselves. I am especially anxious to learn how the rest of you teach youth and illustrate the scriptures in ways that register with them. The parables of Jesus are such wonderful teaching tools. Today, however, some of them require some preparatory explanation in order for them to be understood in a modern context. Do any of you have source material you would be willing to share or guide me to? I am especially interested in items related to the four gospels and letters of Paul.

» StCatherine - Don't throw away the stale

I have found what bores me terribly or seems "shallow" is new and fresh to youth or young Christians.

» barton - Source material

I don't know of any one source material, but I have many "illustrations" that I would be willing to share that fit most Bible verses. Some of these are modern parables, that bring the point of Jesus' parables alive.

You need to be very picky about the ones you use as many are shallow and not worth the time to use them.
