» Werthit - Woodwork Refinishing

My house, built in the 60's has blonde wood throughout the entire house. We have rebuilt some rooms and I don't really want to paint the woodwork that is blonde and to replace it would be extremely expensive, i.e. 11 doorways in hall, living room combination that is my current project. Is there any way, other than replacing the wood to get a golden oak finish?

The best way to give your woodwork a golden oak glow will take some work. Carefully remove the woodwork from the walls. You may need to use a nail set to drive the finish nails completely through the woodwork to remove it without breaking it. Removing it carefully may end up being the hardest part of the project.

Once you have the woodwork off the walls, then you can strip it without having to worry about damaging your walls or floors. Just follow the information in my article. Once you have the finish completely removed, it is time to stain the wood.

There are many good stains on the market. I have just gotten a thought for a future article...thanks. In the meantime, your best bet is to go to your local library and look for the latest books on refinishing wood. They will give you information on the different types of stain and which finishes work best.

Once everything is dry, all that will be left is to replace the woodwork on the walls.

If you have any more questions, just ask. Good luck and have fun.
