» shydove - Homeless Shelters

Unfortunately, you are right Bea--people would be surprised to know 'who' have been homeless at one time or another.

So many have been taught that you are nobody if you are homeless. Does a shelter over your head make your heart better? Of course it does but only for comfort.

Manicured nails are sometimes on people squeezing the life out of the homeless--they are also on the hand that loves to give. What made them who they are? A roof over their head--a job they hold their head up for as they climb in their car to get to it?

How many homeless people do they pass traversing to that job that have a higher moral life than the driver of the car? Are they less because they are walking? Or, because their shelter is situated among the homes of the same?

Are all drug abusers and alcoholics homeless? If this were true would we have such a high percentage of abused children in homes? Brick homes cover a lot of noises, held in place by stature and the need for silence. What does this say for the victims?

To me, the other side of this issue is called, "The Mortar of Silence." The same issue is raised by the question, 'If no one is there to hear it, does a tree still fall?'

So much for the grandeur of this issue.

» MaryCoxBilz - One day housed, the next day out on the street

I have known more than one person that went from riches to rags. Misfortune shows no favorites. Homelessness needs to be pushed out of its clouded label called poverty and revealed for what it is -- no place to live. This column is a magnificent move in heightening human awareness. It's time to get the facts straight about homelessness and YOU are doing just that. Thank you, Bea.

Most of those losers choose not to work. Most can get a job but choose not to.So yes they are better than most of the bums! They chose to live on the street and the driver chose to get a job and provide for his or her self!

People that choose to work will not be homeless! You are not out of the house the next day.Unless you get fired on the last day of the month In any case those that aren't lazy can work at a temp until they find another job.

In response uneducated posts by bumsarelosers...
It is highly posible to be a well motivated individual and still become homeless.
For example, say you were working at a job making just enough money to pay your rent, in the poverty level, but surviving and putting yourself through college.
Then, suddenly, you are fired because of new management, or your hours are cut drastically.
You hadn't been able to save money while you were making $6.25/hr. ,40 hrs./week because you were not on welfare and had just enough money to pay rent, electric, etc.
You look for another job diligently, at least five applications completed every day. But, currently no one is hiring. Finally, arter being out of work for 3 or 4 weeks, you are hired for a new position. But, your new job pays every 2 weeks, which means you have to wait 3 MORE weeks to get a paycheck. $400 after taxes for 2 weeks of work, your landlord wouldn't wait one month for the rent, so you are evicted.
You are evicted and your only option is to move into an efficiency motel. Furthermore, you must pay about $400 every 2 weeks in just rent to sleep inside. This whole time you have been performing day labor at a temporary agency, when they will send you out to work, because "You are a woman, and this is a man's job." Regardless of how hard you work and how many times you have proven yourself, that you can lift and perform the same as the men do.
You are only making enough to eat PB&J 3 times/day and put gas in your car and wash clothes at the laundrymat. While your primary job pays only the rent at some cheap motel.
Ask yourself this...
What happens if you lose that job through no fault of your own??? Add a child form your ex into the picture and now what do you think??
IF THIS RESPONSE DOES NOT OPEN YOUR EYES,THEN THERE IS NO HOPE FOR YOU!!!
