» MorganSalman - Night in Hell

Great recant, Bernd- it's about time you got that off your chest, and I enjoyed reading it. The absurdity of it all (and your moment by moment replay) made me laugh in spite of myself.

I've had a few nights in hell on the road myself. The first was at age 16... the trip of my very first hitchhike. I was befriended by a drifter on the streets of Albuquerque, New Mexico, and he offered me a place to sleep in an abandoned house nearby.

Once inside, he slowly revealed his intention to have his way with me. Luckily, things didn't happen that way (I'm loathe to tell more about the event yet... read it in my book next year). I walked out of that house in the pre-dawn hours with a new lust for life. That afternoon, I thumbed down my first ride (to Gallup, New Mexico).

.............

It can be so frustrating when we rely on others to get us through (and learn in the process what suckers we can be). The zen of hitchhiking is that we learn the lesson that we do not need any one *particular* person to get us there, just one who identifies with our trek.

Revel & Roll,
