» The_Thumb - More hitchers than I'd ever seen ...

Hitching through Prague two weeks ago I counted some 50 or more hitchers on the motorway out of town. That's the most I've personally seen in one place thus far, and reminded me pungently of the discourse above ... the motorway all the way to Slovakia was littered with hitchers at every exit and services as well. It was Sunday and I can't help but wonder if they were making much headway. I had a ride from north of Prag through to Budapest so didn't get to chat much with them all.

In any case, the difference between Czech and German hitching seems rather immense, for two countries so close!

» jgrace - Hitching/Traveling

I was one of those folks from the 60's who just HAD to get "out there" and see what was true. I lived in CT. and, when I was 18, went to NYC and got a job on a Swedish Ocean liner. Traveled on 2 World Cruises and the South Pacific and Far East. In '72 I got a $50 plane ticket on Icelandic Air from NYC to London. From there, ferried to Sweden, then Denmark. Never waited 5 mins. for a ride in Denmark, but once I crossed into Germany, no rides. Took the Orient Express from Munich to Istanbul, buses through Iran, Afghanistan and Pakistan, stuck in Pak. during Bangladesh War, finally entered India and off to Kathmandu...more to follow?
